I have been teaching swim lessons to elementary school children for the past three years, and I have also volunteered as a camp councilor at a church camp where I would supervise my camp group and teach a bible lesson once per day. In addition to these examples, this summer I was hired to be a para-educator for special education summer school at BOCES where I worked with eleven middle school students for six weeks. Currently, my confidence is level high as I have been doing well in all of my classes, in track, and I am lucky enough to receive support and be surrounded by positive friends, buy when it comes to public speaking I still can become nervous.…

Most people change their career decisions multiple times before they actually pick a final job, but I never had an interest in anything other than being a teacher. I have always connected with younger kids over high school or middle school children, which is why I chose to major in Early Childhood Education. I believe that teachers have the ability not only change the world, but improve it. I want to become a teacher because seeing that light bulb go off and seeing the looks on the student’s faces when they get a problem is a great feeling. Many kids are ignored at home or even bullied at home and I want to make all those children feel wanted and to know that someone is there for them and truly does care about them.…

But also, I learned to self- advocate, work hard and study. Because I discovered how I learned and worked hard to achieve those goals, I graduated from Mercy with a 4.0 G.P.A. Also through Mercy’s service learning program, I got the opportunity to work with children and realize that I wanted to help children, like me, that had learning differences and challenges obtain their goals. I kept that same drive and passion throughout my years at Indiana University Southeast, where I chose to obtain my bachelor’s degree in Special Education. I have worked hard to achieve my goals and…

Malcolm X once said “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.” The people preparing for the future are the students of today. The future they are preparing for is theirs and America’s. I have confidence that I can contribute to helping students create a future for themselves and others through working with students who have special needs. Due to students in SPED (Special Education) needing the curriculum tailored to their specific needs, the Progressive educational philosophy has been one to inspire me.…
