I started the social work program at Oakland University in 2013 at that time my goal was to obtain my BSW with a minor in child welfare. My other goal was to work for the D.H.H.S in child protection services. As I venture into my field placement, I have no reluctance to serve in any settings and/or with any population. I have learned through my 24 years in the human services field to expect the unexpected and be prepared for anything. According to the Children’s Bureau (Administration on Children, Youth and Families, Administration for Children and Families) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “For 2014, a nationally estimated 1,580 children died of abuse and neglect at a rate of 2.13 per 100,000 children in the national population” (Greenberg & Lopez, 2014). In my opinion, this statistic is outrageous for a nation that prides itself in being the land of the free.
