I chose to work with Project HEAL because of my interest in eating disorders, an interest that began at a young age as I witnessed my aunt and grandmother struggle with the disorder. I updated Project HEAL’s Twitter account to spread awareness about eating disorders, a duty that required me to research these disorders, learn about and emphasize the importance of treatment, and synthesize my findings into short, powerful messages for public consumption. I soon learned about how difficult eating disorders are to treat, how deadly they can be, and the immense barriers to treatment. I believe there must be affordable after-school childcare resources designed to bolster self-esteem. Children with high self-esteem are less likely to develop eating disorders, as well as other mental illnesses. Further, the implementation of health programs in schools that promote positive body image can help counteract the negative messages children are receiving from the media regarding the ideal body and can, consequently, decrease the emergence of eating disorders among adolescents.
My career goal is to become a clinical social worker, which is why I want to pursue my social work education at the Silver School. After completing my MSW, I hope to work with eating disorder patients, possibly in a rehabilitation center or hospital setting. As a social worker, I want to work in underserved areas to help low-income, minority populations obtain access to mental health services, particularly eating disorder
