Personal Statement: A Career In Social Work

Decent Essays
Confucius said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life” and that is what I plan to do. For as long as I can remember I always loved helping people, but I never thought of making a career out of it until my senior year came around. While working towards my senior 100 hours I began working at a local elementary school and where I found I loved helping the kids and playing with them. So with some research I found social work was an interest I had and with so many different opportunities in the field it seemed like a perfect fit for me. I will be able work with all different age groups from infants to high schoolers and from a private practice to a hospital. After I graduate I plan on going to work at an adoption

My desire to pursue a master’s degree in social work was fueled by the outcome of my experiences of learning about domestic violence in my undergraduate course. It was also influenced by my active role different organizations where I was able to provide care for child victims of domestic violence. The desire of furthering my studies started way back when I was volunteering at a non-profit organization with an objective of becoming more familiar in working with children that were coming from a less advantaged families. I was first inspired to look into Social Work as a career when I began learning about Family in AS Sociology as it was intriguing to learn about the factors that influence children and their development as well as their socialisation into wider society via the education system. I first met a social worker when my parents divorced over ten years ago and feel that her intervention and advice made a positive impact on me and my siblings when the transition from being raised by two parents to one became difficult to cope with. This led me to the conclusion that the role of social workers is important as they ensure vulnerable people in society, who may find themselves in an instable situation or phase of their life, regain equilibrium and are offered the support that they require to do so. During my time working as a cashier and crew member at Burger King, Thorpe Park…

My first experience with a LCSW gave me a strong desire to never become one. This was due to the fact that my abused best friend was scared that my mother had reached out to CPS for help. While individuals interested in social work may say that their career goals stem from the fact that they would like to “help people”, I understand that social workers cannot change people’s lives, but people can change their own life. And social workers often have the keys and the ability to teach an individual how. Any profession can be considered a “helping profession”: we need dentists, nurses, doctors, accountants, even IRS agents.…
