Some people can escape the well. They might be lucky enough to live where the walls are easier to scale, or where the ground is higher. Others pay to have ladders sent down.
On the surface, people are much the same as in the well. But their children receive better educations; they get better jobs, raise happier families, and live longer lives.
Surprisingly, the well is an expensive place to live and job prospects are poor. Some people never get out. Sometimes, when one member falls in, whole families plummet down with them.

Without it, the world becomes a much harder place to live, if we end up living at all. Without it, we become well-people. It’s difficult to imagine going to school, working a job or supporting a family while in poor health. And yet, hundreds of millions of people worldwide are forced into these circumstances everyday.
I am not so much interested in global health as I am frustrated by the shocking health inequalities that exist despite readily available solutions. Improved access to health services allows people to become better educated, lets women make healthy family-planning decisions, and improves prospects for children and adults suffering mental illness. Improving health is the first step in alleviating inequality and restoring dignity, and should be a priority of governments and international NGOs the world over.
There are many reasons that I want to work for Grand Challenges Canada, the foremost being that it would allow me to contribute to purposeful change in the global health sphere. As an anthropology major GCC appeals to me because rather than hastily apply “universal” health solutions, it partners with innovators to provide unique answers to local health problems. As a biology major and scientist, I truly respect GCC’s commitment to outcome driven development and its breadth of health innovations. Some of the most necessary innovations are not revolutionary industry disruptors; they are preventative measures people will use in their homes
