INTRODUCTION: A FIELD OF INTEREST

As a freshman in a university engineering program, it is time that I begin to consider how I will use my personal interests and my educational opportunities to develop a path that will lead me to an enjoyable and successful career. Based upon my interest in the natural world, my skills in mathematics and the natural sciences, and my creativity, I believe that I am suited to apply my abilities to create a career for myself in the field of environmental engineering.

Before one decides to pursue a career in any field, one must consider their personal interests, experiences, and motivations for participating in a field as well as the working conditions that they wish to have in their employment.

As a member of my school’s Science Olympiad team, I participated in events including fossil identification, geology, and entomology. Though I won multiple events at both the regional and state levels, my highest achievement with the team was in an event titled “Green Generation” that focused on the implementation of sustainable technology in renewable energy production, the management of pollutants and industrial waste products, and the effects of society on the environment with the goal of environmental protection. I found the varied subjects covered by the event interesting, and after intensive study and research I was able to place first in the event in the regional competition and third in the state level competition. Green Generation was my first exposure to the field of environmental and sustainable innovation, and through my study I realized the change that the engineers who developed these innovations could bring to both society and the natural …show more content…
From my high school and college experiences, I have determined that I would enjoy a career that is steadily dependable enough to keep me comfortable and confident yet is varied and explorational enough to keep my interest. I hope to have a job that would enable me o travel and to work in locations outside of the stereotypical office setting, especially if I am able to work with groups of people across cultures to solve environmental challenges. I am interested in working with different people, across both disciplines of study and cultures, in a collaborative team, as a variety of different people is vital to the creation of the variety of different ideas that are needed to find the best solution to any
