Locally I have been a part of the Arts forum and actively participate in meetings, workshops and annual festivals. I have organized several local art exhibitions and developed close relationships with local artists who often mentor my year 12 students. I have led committee’s to plan and organise events such as the ‘Come Out’ Festival, live school performances, indigenous dance workshops and drama workshops by Bell Shakespeare. Living in a remote area has restricted the shows and events that our students can visit. To overcome this challenge I have worked hard to organize online virtual excursions enabling our students to immerse themselves in the Arts and still access and communicate with artists.

I have established working relationships with the Art teachers across the Far North Partnership and have provided them with my programs and resources. I collaborate with these teachers at our annual partnership training days and regularly communicate through email.

I have initiated and scheduled meetings for the Arts Faculty to discuss programs, share ideas and resources, moderate work, plan programs and provide collegial support. I have led my own professional development workshops which have been delivered to R-6 teachers and secondary Art teachers. These workshops were designed to assist teachers in understanding the Visual Arts Australian Curriculum and offered hands on tasks for teachers to use in their own classrooms. Feedback from these sessions were positive.

I have developed an implementation plan for teachers to introduce project based learning into their learning areas, which is being offered to Middle School teachers. The implementation plan was based on research around inquiry based learning, providing Middle School students with research skills in preparation for the Research Project. I am an active participant in the SACE Improvement Team and I lead the Middle School improvement

Whilst producing Figure 2, I discovered several key connections that I believe are significant. I think the demand for a local art club is the result of two factors. First, it was clear to me that political decisions around educational reform and the current curriculum have resulted in the decline of arts learning in schools (Neelands et al., 2015, p.44-45). Indirectly this has left a gap in the market and therefore customers (the majority of them being parents) who rate creative vocational learning have searched for out-of-school opportunities for their children. In addition, many who are cared for by social services, creative learning offers an outlet for expression including an opportunity for development and confidence building.…

With more than fifty thousand students attending Michigan State University and over 800 registered student organizations, there is plenty of opportunity for MSU students to get involved in whatever their interests may hold. Wharton Center Student Marketing Organization (WCSMO) is one of them. A few years ago WCSMO members, realizing all the art related opportunities on campus, came up with an idea to get as many of them as possible in one location. They call it the Creative Collaboration and WCSMO President Emily Seigneurie says it’s been nothing but a success. “We had so many people interested in the event that we had to expand it this year.…

1 I come from a long line of educators and administrators on both sides of my family. Various relatives of mine have taught me to understand and appreciate the importance of education. This being the case, they have inspired my decision to be a teacher, preferably an elementary school teacher. Last year, I sat in on my aunt’s third grade class at Washington Irving, an elementary school in my district that I attended for three years. After visiting the classroom a handful of times, I absolutely fell in love.…

The Artist and Sustainability in American Arts Organizations Multiple facets facilitate the success of arts organizations; two of those facets are the artist and sine qua non of sustainability. To grasp the importance of artists and the sustainability of arts organizations, the significant contribution of arts to society must first be established. Robert L. Lynch (2015) highlights the arts as a catalyst of bringing people together, whom might otherwise not interact, to build stronger communities through connection. Human connection and understanding are essential to forward a community, a country. Arts organizations are unique in that they nurture the careers of those who produce art, who in turn offer historical perspective as a reflection…

My long-term professional goal is to work in theater education providing youth who otherwise would not have access to theater and arts education an outlet to grow creatively. I hope to use my time with Teach for America to begin incorporating arts education into school districts that currently lack the funding to do so. As a person who grew up in the arts, I know how much theater and art taught me such as, being an outlet for coping with hardship, creating a safe space for me to learn and explore my talents, and also giving confidence to reach my goals. It is because of my experiences that I want to work to make sure that students that come after me still have the opportunity to find the artist in themselves. It is my hope that my long-term…

One of the most important strategies that are implemented by the provision of art opportunities for all the students is to combine generalist classroom teachers and the arts specialists. Generalist teachers are those teachers who are able or expected to handle teaching of more than one subject to students of various grades. This is possible by the involvement of the teachers in the arts in a time when they are free of teaching. This has helped the generalist classroom teachers to develop their professional skills in arts and make their practice of teaching more effective and attractive. Several researchers such as (Armstrong, 2000; Baum, Viens, & Slatin, 2005) have highlighted the fact that the confidence of the elementary teachers are boosted…
