Personal Statement: A Career As A Writer

When I was around six or seven years old, I would line up my Webkinz stuffed animals in perfect rows and cut up notebook paper for small worksheets. Sometimes I’d even read out loud to them or make up “once upon a time” stories to tell them in the private area of my bedroom. Since then I have been interested in becoming either a professional writer or a teacher, preferably a middle school English teacher. Deciding what I want to be while only a freshmen in high school isn’t a piece of cake. By the time we reach college, the entire job market may have changed. There may not be need for teachers or writers when I’m finally ready to become one or the other. Both careers have their benefits and drawbacks and it’s going to be hard to decide between the two. A secondary school teacher may have a better employment outlook, but a professional fiction writer may have better working conditions and an easier education. …show more content…
(Heaton 51). I would actually enjoy teaching, guiding, and looking out for students through the entire time I have them as my students. Educational requirements for becoming a secondary/junior high school teacher include at least a bachelor’s degree in the subject I would be teaching, possessing or working towards a master’s degree, and I would need to be certified in my state as a teacher. The working conditions are what I’m worried about though. Apparently I will be standing most of the day and by the end of school hours I will have put massive strain on my voice. I have to say though, talking for an entire day doesn’t seem like the worst thing for me. Despite this, the employment outlook of a secondary school teacher is looking very good ("Teacher, Secondary

I chose to pursue a teaching career for middle school because I feel that children are at that age where they are interested in everything. They want to know more than what they learned when they were in elementary school and that makes me excited for them. I remember when I was younger when I first told my parents that I wanted to become a teacher because my seventh grade math teacher had the greatest influence on me, and I remember them telling me that becoming a teacher would be a mistake because they didn’t make much money. To this very day, I believe that if you want to become a teacher it’s because you have a big heart and you’re not in it for the income but for the outcome. Hard work and determination will allow me to pay for the things that I want in life, such as my dream house, and children, vacations, cars, and more…

Whether we know it or not in this modern society we are writers everyday of our lives. These interactions shape not only how we communicate but how we write as well. Personally, I have been shaped by the influence of both other writers I have known and those I have only read the creations of. Those same influences contributed to both my writing style in the classroom and to my identity as a writer. I spent a lot of my childhood with my nose deep in fiction novels at near by libraries.…

I think my middle school writing career overall was not really that big of a deal. I just write because the simple fact that I don’t want to get a bad grade and especially if the assignment was an important factor to my grade and I want to get a decent grade. There's not really much of a story to tell besides, I just wrote because I had no other option but to write. My strengths as a writer are coming up with an interesting or funny story.…

I was the cinematographer for a documentary recently and I captured the b-roll footage to put throughout the movie. The documentary was a group project that I did for a video production class. People always say that artists of any kind are crazy to follow their dreams. The same goes for writers. Everybody always says that the chances you’ll even get published are slim to none. Most people change their career decisions multiple times before they actually pick a final job, but I never had an interest in anything other than being a teacher. I have always connected with younger kids over high school or middle school children, which is why I chose to major in Early Childhood Education. I believe that teachers have the ability not only change the world, but improve it. I want to become a teacher because seeing that light bulb go off and seeing the looks on the student’s faces when they get a problem is a great feeling. Many kids are ignored at home or even bullied at home and I want to make all those children feel wanted and to know that someone is there for them and truly does care about them.…

Describe Yourself As A Writer I’ve come to realize that after years of writing papers, I’m actually a better writer than I give myself credit for. I’ve noticed over time that I’ve advanced in how I structure my paragraphs, however, not so much with my sentences. It’s like making a cake look delicious at first glance with frosting and decorations, but then you take a bite and there 's way too much sugar or it 's overcooked in the inside. My strength in writing includes: using better words to describe what I’m writing about, spelling complex words, creativity, and passion.…
