Personal Statement: A Career As A Surgical Assistant

Great Essays
There I was, a young boy, waiting with my family in the hospital and the Surgical Assistant was taking care of my younger brother’s infected pre-auricular sinus. Ignorantly, I asked why he didn’t cut it open to relieve the pain quickly. The assistant replied, “That is the job of the surgeon.” I was fortunate enough to be allowed on to the surgical observation deck and was enthralled by what I saw. I fell in love with surgery instantly but my decision to actually become a surgeon was a gradual one.

The exploration of the beauty and complexity of human anatomy, the immediate and dramatic improvements in a patient, the unexplainable rush while performing procedure, and the hands-on nature of the job are all qualities that fit my personality

To completely grasp the vast expanse of surgical field, during college years, i started watching surgical procedures broadcasted live from different hospitals on internet and was amazed at its innovative nature. I got a chance to closely observe life “as a general surgery resident” after my friend started General surgery residency in New-York and loved every aspect of it, so much so that even before starting surgical clerkship I was certain that I wanted to be a surgeon. My experiences during surgical rotation confirmed that I like surgery.

It has always been my priority to provide the best possible care to my patients. Working as an intern in developing country i observed that without a good residency program it is not possible to acquire necessary skills to become leader in surgical field and decided to move to United States to pursue my dream career. Indeed surgery is highly competitive field but the notion that “hard-work and persistence conquer all things” has been always my guiding

I have learned know how of pre-op patient optimization and post-op care and understand the logistics of operating room. Having worked in a busy hospital with limited resources i have developed ability to take clinical decisions quickly and to find innovative ways to use the limited resources in efficient way. My happiness knew no bounds when the department chair commended my work on that day during monthly meeting.

Throughout my medical training I have been guided by great teachers and have deep passion for teaching others. I am currently reading the memoir, Hot Nights, Cold Steel, Life, Death and Sleepless Nights of a Surgeons first years. This book is a personal account of Dr. Collins, a medical doctor who narrates his years through his surgical orthopedic residency and the physical and emotional roller coaster it took him on in those 4 years. I have chosen this book because I am interested in medicine and I wanted to take a glimpse specifically into the surgical realm. Everyone knows that being a doctor must be taxing on a person for countless reasons, but even more so for a surgeon. A surgeon hands, eyes, and intellect have the power to do remarkable procedures but also horrific damage if even the slightest detail is off balance.…

I developed a burning desire to do more, and to help more. Therefore, this influenced my decision to do an internship in a hospital in Hungary. During my internship, I was impressed by the spirit of collaboration between the community and the physicians, and I was exposed to some of the responsibilities of a doctor. From this I learned the necessity of humanity in a physician. Throughout this internship experience, I learned anatomical principles and dissection techniques such as ways to hold the dissecting instruments with great precision and to manipulate scissors with the thumb and fourth fingers, as surgeons do.…

The article, “My Last Day as a Surgeon” by Paul Kalanithi, made me realize how important our health is and how important it is to stay determined in what we do. It was extremely disappointing to read an article that describes the last day of someone’s dream life. Paul Kalanithi’s educational life was very impressive and the dedication that he had put in to accomplish his dreams was exceptional. In the article, he mentioned how he kept an “extra set of clothes for the night [he doesn’t] leave,” which gave me the basic overview of the hours for a surgeon. It was extremely sad to find out that he had lung cancer and how he would make his own comparisons from the past and recent images.…

Some say the Civil War furthered medical intelligence, others say it prevented people from further study of the medical field. Surgeries back then were brutal and sometimes, unnecessary. Amputations, for example, existed among the army because bullets were stuck in the bones of the soldiers. Medics could not save two-thirds of wounded soldiers because they knew nothing about bacteria and the importance of sanitation. They dressed wounds with the same bandages on different people because the medics thought it would save supplies of bandages (Wegner).…

They call them “Tap-taps,” the brightly painted open back trucks that transport passengers through the dusty streets of Haiti. A traveler taps the side of the vehicle to board, pays, rides and then taps to jump off at a desired destination. For one particular man who sat with his face covered by a towel, that destination was the Diegue clinic in Port-au-Prince. All I knew from intake was that this patient was here for a foot issue. I noticed the adult sitting uncomfortably, a towel wrapping his foot, as his eyes scanned around the room.…

My story began at the age of 10 years, when I woke up at 3:00 am at my mother's scream because my father suddenly became unable to speak and move.…

Ever since I was a little girl, I found myself fascinated with the intricacies of the human body. I would spend hours playing doctor or nurse with my sister, and even when she did not want to play with me I would improvise with my dolls. I would watch medical TV shows such as “Greys Anatomy” and I would continue to fall in love with the thought of medicine and helping people with their treatment and potentially saving their lives. Working as a medical scribe in an OBGYN office this past summer has only furthered my interest into becoming a physician’s assistant.…

I feel that the preoperative briefing that took place before the patient arrived is what allowed the team to work so well in this emergency case, all of the details that was known about the patient was shared to the entire theatre team, with enough time to be able to prepare and collect all the appropriate equipment that was needed but also equipment that was possibile needed so that all avenues of care was covered and prepared. Bethune (2011) stated that teamwork, communication, and efficiency in the operating theatre is widely recognised to be suboptimal. Poor communication is the single biggest cause of medical error. The surgical operating theatre is a potentially highly stressed environment where poor communication can lead to fatal errors.…

When I was a child when someone asked me, "What are you going to be when you grow up?" My answer was always, "I am going to be a nurse. Right out of high school making the decision of what you are going to do for the rest of your life is scary, so I juggled back and forth from teaching and nursing. I eventually decided to take a break for a while until I knew what I needed to do.…
