I am a rising senior in high school at Oxford Academy in Cypress, California. I am the Community Outreach Director at Our Climate Story, a non-profit dedicated to sharing the human impact of climate change, where I organize workshops, partnerships, and media. I also coordinate a Take Back the Tap campaign on my campus with the Food and Water Watch, where I utilize skills such as canvassing, event planning, and power mapping to construct a campaign. I also have experience with grant writing as part of this initiative. Additionally, I am the founding Editor-in-Chief of Cocoon Zine, an Asian-American feminist zine that focuses on youth and intersectionality. I fully believe that my skills and experience in community outreach and organizing would …show more content…
I already have some involvement in activism, but experience in an organization that specializes in consulting for social changemakers would help me decide if I would like to pursue social change professionally and provide me with the ability to establish connections that would make it easier for me to do so. Additionally, I hope to learn skills I can use to facilitate social change in my own personal projects. Through practice in outreach and research as part of my internship duties, I hope to learn how to more effectively target my campaigns and duties. This internship would also provide me with access to individuals who I can learn from to bolster my own projects. Most of all, though, an internship at Velvet Frame would mean another opportunity to encourage social changemakers and activists to do good in the world, leading to a more just and sustainable …show more content…
Here, I will speak more about the personal significance of my work. My work with non-profit Our Climate Story and Take Back the Tap exemplify my strong passion for sustainability and the environment. They also show a specific context of moving beyond traditional apocalyptic warming claims; by focusing on the human side of climate change, Our Climate Story centers the real-world impacts and emphasizes environmental justice. Furthermore, Take Back the Tap focuses on individual action, dispelling the myth that climate change is an insurmountable force that only governments can

My interest in working for the William and Flora Hewlett (Hewlett) Foundation stems from my commitment to addressing social issues facing my community and society. Specifically, this role will help me connect with practitioners and advocates across the county working to encourage legislators to be more pragmatic and to encourage citizens to become more informed therefor enabling them to fully participate in the democratic process. Additionally, this role is an opportunity to further develop program management and coordination skills, better understand how support a high functioning team of philanthropic thought leaders, and learn the intricacies of grants and contracts management. Since attending Spelman College, I have evolved as a person mentally and socially, especially in my efforts regarding volunteering and the production of social change. Before attending Spelman and joining Lady Buds, a mentoring program for young underprivileged girls, I understood to a degree, how social change impacts people and their communities. However, after being a part of Lady Buds, my understanding of social change vastly increased, specifically how it affects the communities within Atlanta and on a larger scale our society. Upon entering Spelman college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a mentoring group, and while there was a multitude of groups to choose from, I decided on Lady Buds because their mission statement resonated with my goal before entering Spelman College.…

It would be the greatest honor to be a TRIO SSS transfer mentor for Wenatchee Valley College students. I am interested in being a transfer mentor because as a first-generation college student I understand that being a first-generation student of color comes with barriers, but also gives me a unique and valuable perspective with which to bring to higher education. My parents only have an elementary education and have no understanding of the U.S educational system and as the middle child of five siblings, I understand the responsibilities and pressures youth in these populations have with shouldering the burden to accessing and disseminating information to their entire family. Additionally, I understand the cultural challenges some students of color may face as many traditional households discourage pursuing…

I identify greatly with the vision at Santa Clara University. Ever since I was young, I have dreamt of changing the world for the better. I hoped one day I could save the world from itself. To be the superhero that would swipe away the conflict and pain that is ever present in today’s media. While the dreams of saving the innocent from super villains has faded, the backbone and underlying foundation has not dissolved.…

It is with enthusiasm that I submit my application for a Summer Intern position with Rosie’s Place. I am a second year student at Wellesley College majoring in Peace and Justice Studies and Spanish. I am passionate about empowering and serving disenfranchised communities through education and public policy. For this reason, I would welcome the opportunity to work for a non-profit organization like Rosie’s Place that actively fights to bring social justice through both the personal lives of women as well as through the social structures that perpetuate their marginalization.…

After reading and discussing “Learning to Die in the Anthropocene” I was left class thinking about it a lot. I really enjoyed the reading, but sort of left with the feeling that it was useless. While it clearly did not offer any practical solutions for climate change, I believe it offered an insight that can be incredibly powerful. Science can tell us climate change is a problem and that x, y, and z will happen if we do not stop doing what we are doing. For the most part, we know this.…

I feel like I am professionally ready for my senior year placement. I am looking forward to being able to spend much more time and actually see what a social worker does and interact with a social worker on a much different level than previous service learning’s. I believe that being able to interact with individuals at this last site will help me tremendously when it comes to interacting with clients and employees at my senior placement. This service learning helped me to acquire social skills, which will be extremely helpful when it comes to next year. I would like to build on my learning for the next academic year by understanding and reading more about interviewing, assessment, intervention, and evaluation of practice.…

Brian’s lecture was really interesting, and got me thinking about the kinds of social justice that I am passionate about. I am really not one for participating in rallies or anything like that, so I figured I was not right for social justice, but after reading in On Being a Therapist I realized social justice can be really varied. He talks about how he has a foundation for helping girls in Nepal to stay in school, because many families who cannot afford school for all of their children sometimes sell their daughters to brothels (Kottler, 2010). I am passionate about women’s rights and it would be incredible to be able to be involved in some kind of social justice that works to advocate for women not just in America but all over the world. But again, this is where cultural competency and understanding addressing frameworks comes into play: equality and empowerment does not look the same to me as it does to women in India, Japan, or…

is what led them to find the pleasure and happiness in their life, and this in return affected their involvement in service. Greg Boyle’s work, on the other hand, focused on the idea of advocacy, and this deeply affected the manner in which I viewed my own involvement at Samaritans. Boyle was working with individuals who were deemed as the lowest members of society, and this is parallel to the people who use Samaritans as a service. Through the work that Boyle did, he was able to listen to the needs of these individuals by simply being their friend, and was able to advocate for them to be able to better their positions in society. Similarly, at Samaritans, I learned to befriend individuals and advocated for them as members of society through…

Frederick Douglass once said “It is not light that we need, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake.” This means that difficult circumstances are needed to become better versions of ourselves. As someone who overcame the difficulty of balancing academics, athletics, and involvement with clubs and organizations on campus, I personally agree with this statement. Based upon the qualities I developed during these difficult circumstances, Frederick Douglass would believe I’m deserving of a scholarship bearing his name.…

Having attending two colleges, I know what is important to look for in colleges. My past has allowed me to know what factors will truly influence success. Not only is education important, but the educators play a key role in the success of students. The student to faculty ratio still allows for a relationship with faculty members despite the large population. Seeing the internship opportunities, resources provided, as well as the campus itself, I feel assurance that this is a place where I belong, a place where I will always be busy but also enjoy what I am doing and get the help I need.…

During my high school career I have been actively involved within my school’s community through Mini-THON, school newspapers, SADD, and part time employment. Mini-THON has been predominant throughout my high school experience; I have been an active member of the Mini-THON committee for the past three years, following the footsteps of my grandparents, Gary and Millie Christ, who served on the Four Diamonds Advisory Board for over two decades. Being a part of this committee includes organizing fundraisers, and preparing and decorating for the annual Mini-THON. These tasks work toward having a special night that honors the Four Diamonds. The Four Diamonds Fund is dear to me, as many members of my community have been diagnosed with childhood cancer.…
