I recently qualified as a social worker at the age of 31. Yet, I still feel it is difficult to pin-point when I decided to become a social worker. I was fortunate enough to spend a shadowing week at the social services department as part of “erhverspraktik” when I was 16; work experience program in Denmark. I was raised in a Catholic home and this may have had a strong impact in forming my core values and morals.…
Discuss why you want to be a social worker. What personal, academic, volunteer and/or work experiences have influenced this choice? If you have worked in other fields, please discuss the reasons for this change. Helping people, is why most people say they would like to be a Social Worker and quite frankly its starting to sound a little cliché. However, it is something that I have always been passionate about.…
I am currently going through a situation that resonates with me greatly each day. I have taught first grade for four years and have made the decision to discontinue my current profession in order to embark on a new journey and carry out my responsibilities as a Social Work Student in the master’s program at the University of South Carolina. It is difficult to know that I am leaving my school and comfort zone. This is the only school where I have taught and going somewhere new will be scary- and exciting. More importantly, it is difficult knowing I will not see my former students anymore.…
I enjoy talking to the families and seeing the progress they make. Between my time at my internship and my time in the social work program I have grown professionally. I have emerged as a leader which I have never been before. I take the lead in group assignments, and most recently worked as the sole chairperson for the social work club at the Mt. Clemens OU campus. As the chairperson I sought out volunteer opportunities…
Through my experience I’ve found children and the aging population to be the most vulnerable, and I would be honored to serve either population. As a social worker I hope to be the voice for those who cannot speak and for those whose voice is so low that it remains unheard. Upon receiving my LCSW I would like to go into private practice to offer counseling services to children and families. I have had my own personal experiences with reaching out to others and asking for help. The most memorable incident occurred when I lost my daddy in 2014.…
Running head: GSC VOLUNTEER FINAL 1 GSC Volunteer Final Teiona Schaaf University of Nevada, Las Vegas Running head: GSC VOLUNTEER FINAL 2 I was extremely apprehensive about giving time to an assisted living facility because of the stigma that surrounds the elderly. I felt that I was not cut out for work that involved the elderly. It has been almost a year of me volunteering with this demographic and I absolutely love it!…
Since I first moved from Italy to the UK, it was very challenging having to learn English as my third language. I was able to pick it up by working with a diverse range of people; this helped me to speak confidently in front of my peers. Working with different people, by listening, advising, and finding strategies to help solve the problem, has always been a key interest of mine. This reinforced my decision to study a degree in Social Work.…
Ever since I was little, I was aware that my brother Keng was physically unable to do things that everyone else in my family could. However, this aspect about my brother introduced me to the profession of social work. We always had a social worker come in and out of the house. I remember my mom telling me who they were and what they did. I respected their line of work and their ability to understand my family’s life situation.…
Everything that has happened in my life points to a career in Social Work as the best career for…
The career paths of a nurse practitioner and a social worker from family and children are both one of hard work and great personal reward. As a nurse practitioner, I would be able to help people with their health issues. As a social worker I would mostly be helping out families and children with their psychological needs. If I were to keep following the path of a nurse practitioner I would be helping patients, taking their health information, helping doctors perform drug administrations, helping patients recover from their sickness and injuries, and just help people overall. As a social worker I would offer psychological help to families and children with their well being, offer advice to families who wish to adopt children, and in schools I would help children with their emotional and psychological…
Career and College Research Paper The career that I want to do after I graduate is a social worker. Child and family social worker is the official job title. I have always been the type of person that wanted to do something for others. Whether its making an impact on a person’s life or making a child smile, just knowing I’ve made a difference in the world and that I can help someone is something that makes me feel good about myself. That’s where social work comes into play. I’ve always seen social work as the job where I can help others. It doesn’t matter who you’re helping an adult or child, social workers make a tremendous impact on people’s lives and it is something that holds my interest about the field.…
My first experience with a LCSW gave me a strong desire to never become one. This was due to the fact that my abused best friend was scared that my mother had reached out to CPS for help. While individuals interested in social work may say that their career goals stem from the fact that they would like to “help people”, I understand that social workers cannot change people’s lives, but people can change their own life. And social workers often have the keys and the ability to teach an individual how. Any profession can be considered a “helping profession”: we need dentists, nurses, doctors, accountants, even IRS agents.…
Professional Development Values Service, Integrity and awareness of ethical dilemmas are the values which led me to pursue a Social Work Is not capitalized career. The value service inspired me to travel out of my own bubble and learn about serving others, who live in a different environment than me. The problems I face at home led me to pursue a career where I will face many issues that deal with the morals of many people. I enjoy learning about other peoples’ lives and applying them to how I live at home with my five family members. Applying Integrity to a Social Work career is a wise decision because of listening to people who have many problems, but these people are willing to work with an organization in order to gain an improvement to their lifestyle.…
