Personal Statement: A Career As A Military Social Worker

Decent Essays
In my opinion, being a military social worker would take a great amount of knowledge, skills, strength, and inner power. I am looking forward to being able to spend much more time and actually see what a social worker does and interact with a social worker on a much different level than previous service learning’s. I believe that being able to interact with individuals at this last site will help me tremendously when it comes to interacting with clients and employees at my senior placement. This service learning helped me to acquire social skills, which will be extremely helpful when it comes to next year. The person I am today is someone that has had a great deal of life experience in the short amount of time that I’ve been here. I enlisted into the Marine Corps at the age of 17 and turned 18 the day I arrived to boot camp. I quickly had to learn what it meant to be responsible for those around me to include their welfare, their lives, and their families. I also developed strong leadership and management skills to accompany those skills in which are needed to be a successful Career Marine. I was meritoriously promoted twice to the ranks of Corporal (E-4) and Sergeant (E-5) for demonstrating those skills in an exemplary way.…

Joining the Military has been the mark at this point, helping me express my true character. On my aimless path to finding my true calling in life after high school, there were many swings and misses. My dad is an electrical contractor so there's where i first put my mind into but realized this really might not be my exact calling I mean it never really drew my interest as much as i felt it should. Then I tried carpentry and being and office assistant, but those made me feel more hopeless than I ever had on my path to finding something that actually inspired me to wake up every morning, fall asleep knowing I'm right where I belonged. Until I joined the military, which probably wasn’t my easiest decision.…

Throughout the years my vision for what I would do for the rest of my life has changed over time (as it does with all children and young adults.) I would look into the future and see myself floating in space, fighting criminals, or owning my own business. While the later option still remains a goal of mine, the formers have dissipated away into Oblivion. As I matured and developed I realized how important family was in life. Not just close relatives, but ancestors as well.…

What are your thoughts regarding your ability to work with military families and children as a social worker? I personally would be “fine” maybe even a bit too comfortable working with military families and children as a social worker because I grew up with an alcoholic father and I am starting to see the similarities, which honestly took twenty-five years all because everyone is afraid to face the truth; therefore, things just get swept under the rug and open communication is forbidden in order to protect the toxicity of the household. One quote from Park (2011) that struck me states, ‘‘a common saying in the military is that when one person joins, the whole family serves’’ (p. 66). This unfortunately reigns true with addiction. Alcoholism is a family disease that tears away at the family unit.…
