Personal Background and Social Identities:
Being a first-generation student played a major part in my social identity. Both my parents were immigrants from China, who became to America for better opportunities for their children. As the first Asian-American family to move into the street I grew up in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, my family faced a lot of discrimination and prejudice. Despite that, my parents worked hard in order to provide me and my brother the opportunities they did not have back in China. Raised by my grandparents, being Chinese is important not only in how I perceive myself culturally, but also I hope to continue to pass down the traditions that my grandparents taught me. Whether it is a team of doctors diagnosing a patient or a team of doctors and nurses preparing for a surgery, it is the collaboration of individuals, each with their own knowledge and skills, communicating together that allows healthcare professionals to perform complex tasks. A synergistic relationship - each member of the team has the ability to contribute a different perspective on a common problem; that when combined together, creates an a more organized and thorough picture, or solution. The unison of all team members, under a common goal, as a "single unit," rather than as separate units, or individuals, results in a solution that is more thorough than if done via the combination of each individual's effort. As a result, the collaborative interactions between individuals emphasizes the idea of individuals from different fields interacting together in order to understand the bigger picture of a problem, such as the cause of a patient's …show more content…
elegans as a model organism to study the effects of P. granule localization and its application in human development to understanding the genetic influences behind psychiatric disorders, my major and research experience demonstrates my interests in developmental genetics and psychiatry. In addition, my experience working with a wide variety of patients from my exposure in the ED at the Mount Sinai Hospital and my interactions with inpatients at the 18N psychiatric unit and outpatients in Bellevue Hospital, demonstrates my clinical experience with patients. In addition, I have shadowed both ED doctors at the Mount Sinai hospital and have attended rounds in the 18N inpatient unit. My clinical experience demonstrates my passion for medicine, particularly psychiatry. My academic experiences not only help provide a background, and framework, in both biology and medicine, which will be useful in my future endeavors throughout medical school, but also provide me a better understanding of the practical applications of medicine and the work dynamics in a
