Purpose Of A Self-Assessment Test (Self Assessment)

Improved Essays
During this week’s reading assignment we were introduced to a “self-assessment” test (Bethel University, 2014). This test is geared towards teaching the student where his/her strengths and weaknesses may be as a student. To be perfectly honest, the first time reading this section I skimmed over it and did not pay it much attention. I simply looked over the questions, but did not take the time to answer them. While going back and actually setting a moment aside to answer them, I found the information gathered to be enlightening. It provided me with information about myself I was aware of, but have not taken the time to assess these shortcomings.

The style format can differ with each professor, unless the school has chosen a blanket writing format for all classes. One style in particular, APA, was created in 1929 by psychologists and business managers to bring a consistency to writing by setting forth a set of style rules and procedures (Bethel University, 2014). This provides the student with a guideline to follow while writing, that will ensure them the capability of using other’s work and still give credit to the original …show more content…
APA seems on the front end to be a bit more user friendly. My personal difficulties with it to this point is knowing when to properly cite a given article. I have yet to grasp the understanding if the same article should be cited multiple times in a paper, or if it is simply implied to reader they can refer to the previous ciation until a new one is given.

There are many advantages to using APA format. Simply put, it gives the writer the opportunity use not only their own knowledge of a topic, but other’s as well. This added tool can completely change the dynamic of a written piece. If cited correctly, it protects you as a student from the dreaded act of “plagiarism” (Bethel University, 2014). I can only hope that I develop a better understanding of the ways of APA, as I never want to fall victim to being accused of stealing someone else’s hard work.

Looking over the directions on how to complete the Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment it sounded like another psychological analysis into our minds to track the way we think (Anderson, Clifton, & Schreiner, 2006). It reminded me of a test given by major companies to a candidate for an available position to see what made you tick or find out if you would steal from them or go postal on the whole company. But to my surprise I actually learned something about myself, things that came natural to me to the point of not really paying any attention to them. According to this assessment my top strength is Strategic which does make sense to me when I started to review the results printed out on my report.…

MLA format was expected to be known through all my past classes and I’ve been so accustomed to using it, I didn’t expect to be surprised reading through Purdue Owl. On the contrary, I did learn a few interesting things that I haven’t been implementing when formatting my essays. When citing my sources, usually my main focus would be the Works Cited page, however the in-text citations have equal importance. Often times, I would save my citations for last, causing me to miss a few points that were maybe hidden, for example a paraphrase rather than an obvious quote. Purdue Owl broke down every element to how to properly cite an essay which was a great refresher.…

APA style of writing has been a huge part of my college career. Although this particular writing technique can be challenging at times, I believe my APA writing skills have become more developed as I have been required to utilize them more in each class. APA adds consistency and clarity in any writing by taking the emphasis off of how information is presented and focuses on the information itself. In the beginning, when I was learning the ins and outs APA, I was thoroughly confused in every way.…

    24. You use appropriate language, avoiding wordiness, while giving the reader all necessary information in strict APA style. I think I would have somewhat trouble with this one because In the past when I was here APA style confused me a lot when it came down to reference. I would usually just copy and paste the link or try to put it in the format and it still didn’t work so it kind of cost me a lot in my classes and my grades.…
