When it was still in operation, one of my favorite treats was to sit outside at Alice Waters' Cafe Fanny and eat beignets with jam while my mom drank Cafe Au Lait. Growing up in a food-centric place made Alice Waters and her farm-to-table movement common knowledge to me. I imagine myself sitting with Alice at Cafe Fanny asking questions about her life as an activist. I wonder how Alice knew how to turn her passion for food justice into action.…
It quickly went from a nice, fun, vacation to a painful, terrible, nightmare. Just about every year before school starts while my mom has meetings for teachers, my dad takes my sister and I on a small, five day trip to different places. This year, we decided to go to St Louis. Little did I know that this trip would soon turn south very, very, fast.…
On September 15, I went and took part in el Grito ceremony held at the Miller Outdoor Theater to celebrate the Mexican Independence Day. I did not know what was el Grito, so I went to that event with an open mind. The show came after a long speech in both Spanish and English about the Mexican community in Houston and the impact of Harvey on the community. I really enjoy the sense of community that I experienced during that event. People came as a family or with a group of friends.…
What is a profound experience? Profound also is known as pro-fundas or “favorable base of origin” when translated from Latin. experience has the Latin stem of experiēns meaning past principle. So in my experience the most noticeable past principle I learned from my base if origin was to cherish what you have. but whats better the conclusion or the story?…
After attending the food bank for my ten hours, I learned quite a bit about the certain people who use the food bank and how the food bank operates to take care of a public health issue. I also learned a ton about the majority of people who actually work at the food bank and why it is important for them as well. As the name portrays, the food bank assists in providing food to people with low incomes. Many of these people are actually mentally disabled or physically disabled.…
Two and a half years ago, quite a few of the men in this dear town were sent on an expedition to inspect and map out the land that President Thomas Jefferson purchased. This mission was a success, despite what the people believe. I cannot lie, this journey was not easy; it was incredibly difficult, but it was worth the money you spent. We learned a lot that can help in the future, the reward we received is greater than the price you paid.…
Blue Ridge Journey “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?” I asked. My family went to Harrisonburg so we could go camping in a cabin.…

When I go college, I do not want to give up my favorite activities, but rather, build upon established interests and create new ones. Honestly, I do not know all of the activities in which I may participate while attending university. This is not because I do not know what I like; I just that I have not been exposed to these things yet. Although my personality is not fully molded, I actively search for novel and fulfilling experiences relating to music, food, and travel.…
We woke up on June 3rd and hit the road again. We were going to try and make it as far as we could today. We made plans to meet up with my dad, grandma, aunt, and brother in Minneapolis, or somewhere close to, for lunch. My dad had been in Minneapolis the previous days, and wanted to see me before I was gone. We met up at a restaurant called Doolittles.…
I have never seen a line so long in my life. We spent at least six to seven minutes in the line. Seven minutes later, we made our way to the front, and the woman asked for our passports. After returning our passport, she told us our seats were ready, but there was a problem with the supervision.…
Feed my starving children is a non-profit organization that packages food to send to malnourished children in several countries. These sustainable meals are made specifically to pack as many nutrients as possible to help nourish and strengthen the children so they can be healthy and conquer their fight against starvation. When most people think about global hunger they think of a lack of production of food in developing countries, however, it’s more than that. Global hunger encompasses not only food production and security, but also distribution and access. Feed my starving children distributes their packed food to about 70 countries which gives children in these countries access to food that otherwise would not be there.…
For my Senior Experience I did my research paper on Genetically Modified Food and why it should be labeled and separated from Non-Genetically Modified Food. When I started the project picking a topic was easy. I knew I wanted to do it on genetically modified food because I want to be a chef and we had just watched a movie about genetically modified food and how it can harm the human body in culinary. After watching this movie I was filled with questions and doing this research paper was an easy way for me to get answers. When it came time to set up my job shadowing I just asked Chef Z if he knew of any farms or restaurants that were certified organic.…
