Imagine going through your entire life without taking personal responsibility for absolutely anything. How would this method of operation affect your life? Day to day life would be chaotic, career advancement would be impossible, and concepts like intrapersonal relationships would quickly become overwhelming and unfeasible. The ability and drive to take personal responsibility in life is a central focal point in the areas of creating a successful life, defining goals and priorities, and creating a structure with which to effectively guide your life.

I review the syllabus for courses weekly and evaluate what is coming up, adding tasks to my calendar and lists and deciding where the most important, time consuming items are and prioritizing them appropriately. I also include items from my professional and personal life, ensuring I have accounted for all important tasks so that nothing slips by or demands attention that needs to be directed elsewhere. An integral part of using these lists as tools to maintain my level of responsibility is daily evaluation of what is left on my list. Becoming a Master Student (Toft, 2011) uses a system of letter ratings to indicate priority of items, and to then evaluate whether items in lower priority left over at the end of any given period need to be altered in order to get them completed in a timely manner. Additionally, paying attention to how my assignments are graded is a key factor in making sure I am staying accountable to my system. Grades are a direct reflection of my performance in my courses, and are therefore a direct measure of whether I am devoting the necessary time and resources to my work. Instructor notes and feedback are also vital, as they direct me in ways I can improve my work.
In conclusion, personal responsibility is a vital piece of creating a successful life, defining goals and priorities, and creating a structure with which to effectively guide your life. Without including it as an active and constant guide in one’s life, the ability to
