Personal Reflective Experience: Cultivating My Role As A Counselor

Decent Essays
Cultivating my role as a supervisor will play an integral part in my holistic development as a counselor. My experience with supervision, thus far, has been that of a supervisee. This experience has enlightened my personal philosophy of supervision by assisting me in defining the techniques I will employ as a supervisor, how I will develop and view the supervisory relationship, how I will facilitate growth with the supervisee and how I will approach issues related to crisis, ethics, and multicultural competence. I fully comprehend that as I progress in my career, my approach may alter and adjust as I actively work with supervisees and utilize my approach in a clinical, supervision setting. However, currently my philosophy of supervision encompasses …show more content…
14). The supervisory role of consultant assisted me astronomically in learning how to conceptualize and develop treatment plans for clients. The process of consultation created an environment in which I felt supported as a supervisee. In this environment, I could bring forth issues I was experiencing in sessions with client and brainstorm proactive solutions without feeling as though I was being evaluated for my performance. This role is one that will be vital to my responsibility as a supervisor. Finally, there is the role of wellness coach. Meany-Walen, Davis-Gage, and Lindo (2016) found that wellness-focused supervision increased supervisees’ total wellness and, thus, reduced the effects of vicarious trauma and burnout. Learning how to practice self-care and actively attend to my wellness is a skill that has been crucial not only for my professional development, but my personal development as well. I am largely thankful that my supervisor taught me wellness as it has prevented my own burnout and assisted me in prioritizing, nurturing, and organizing my life. As a supervisor, teaching my supervisees how to practice and maintain self-care will be a …show more content…
Additionally, my theoretical orientation is cognitive behavioral therapy. For those reasons, my preferred model of supervision is the cognitive behavioral supervision model. The model places heavy emphasis on evaluation, the supervisory alliance, acquisition of knowledge by the supervisee, as well as, problem-solving that is conducted through collaboration of the supervisor and the supervisee (O’Brien & Hauser, 2016). In the initial stages on supervision, the supervisor encourages the supervisee to create a supervision contract in which the roles of both parties are clearly defined; this task sets the foundation for the supervisory alliance (O’Brien & Hauser, 2016). I completed a supervision contract for both my internship and practicum; this task assisted me in understanding the supervision process, which is why it will be a vital component I incorporate in my model of supervision (see Appendix C for an example of a supervision contract from the Counselor Education Program at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, 2016). Additional methods I intend to incorporate into my philosophy of supervision include reviewing recording sessions, addressing cognitive distortions (i.e. imposter’s syndrome), goal setting and modeling (O’Brien & Hauser, 2016). The strength of this model is that it

Model of Family Therapy The Experiential Family Therapy model is a theory that was developed by the practitioners of Carl, Whitaker, Walter Kempler and Virginia Satir. With the Experiential Family Therapy Model, the goal of the therapist is to catalyze the natural drive of the family to reach growth and the full potential of the individual members of the family. Still, the individual practitioners allowed their personality to be instrumental in the success of their unique forms of Experimental Family Therapy, although their focus and goals were similar (Goldberg, 2013). Because of the importance of the individual personality in the success of a model, Whitaker’s Symbolic-Experiential Family Therapy (S-EFT) was selected and will be argued for…

I felt that this observation of myself showed that I was overall, functioning normally with both healthy and minimal unhealthy motivations. Another concern that came across my mind is when I have a…

When I commented to Janet “and because you know that at the base of it’s not you it’s him” I put into my words her thoughts regarding his behaviour. Janet’s response of “well that’s the thing, I don’t let it affect me anymore…” allowed her to then explore why her reactions to her ex-husband had changed. I found this skill of counselling particularly difficult in this session due to our friendship.…
