Sitting in the conference room, the meeting was like any other at my internship with a sexual assault awareness group. My boss tells us about legal definitions of different crimes from stalking to domestic violence while I doodle on my notepad, having heard this all before. “Sexual assault,” she said, “states multiple acts that some people don’t realize count as sexual crimes.” Of course, forced sexual intercourse (rape), attempted rape, force into doing sexual acts, “and even fondling or unwanted sexual touching of any kind,” she said. Those words rang in my head over and over again. After the meeting, I approached my internship supervisor and asked her if let’s say, a boyfriend, engaged in touching that the girl made clear she did not want, …show more content…
I believed I could make real change by taking on sexual assault cases or working in international human rights. My mind was changed when I attended a speaker series put on by my department, where a law enforcement agent presented. Even after so many years watching Law and Order: SVU, law enforcement had never occurred to me as something I would do yet suddenly I found myself extremely excited about the career possibilities. As I researched, I found that not only are college graduates sought after, but even more so were those with graduate …show more content…
I currently find myself drawn to the criminal justice concentration for obvious reasons, and love the large selection of courses. Additionally, being able to continue my education at the University of Arizona would be an amazing opportunity I would not take lightly. Almost three years into my undergraduate studies, this school is still as beautiful and exciting to me as it was when I first took my campus tour in high school. Tucson has become my home and being able to take part in a respected program in one of the UA’s best departments would be an unmatched circumstance. The MLS degree would allow me to pursue a career in Special Victims Unit and many other law enforcement careers. The accelerated program would be an especially good opportunity, as it would allow me to jump into my career sooner and get graduate credit for my similar undergraduate

Detective Blanchard strongly suggests for the individuals seeking a career within law enforcement to attend college and receive a bachelor’s degree before applying. Although this is not required by her agency, this helps officers in getting promotions further down the line. Typically, an applicant must start at the position of a patrol officer in law enforcement agencies. In some cases, an applicant will begin as a detention officer in jailing environments. Detective Blanchard went on to state that if you do in fact receive the job at the starting position, always follow the policies and procedures that are in place.…

Goals are something that I have always thought about in my life. Whether it be graduating high school, passing a test, or going to college. In examining the higher education requirements (post-secondary education) that police hiring agencies have for potential candidates, I found out that Minnesota is one of the few states that specifies having an associate’s degree, a two year program, for entry into the field. Some states such as Wisconsin, require some college credit and subsequent degree completion, but the vast majority of states require just having a high school diploma. Furthermore, no state requires a four year bachelor’s degree as a hiring credential, but some local agencies are beginning to require having a bachelor’s degree. It is evident that leaders in law enforcement are hesitant to embrace the educational movement.…

Learning to write When I attended elementary school, part of the curriculum was penmanship. There was a certain segment of instruction dedicated to penmanship rather than writing. We were given large sheets of oat colored paper with three parallel lines widely spaced. The alphabets were used to print and write in cursive using the midpoint, and upper lines for capital letters. The handwriting grades were based on neatness and readability.…

A person’s education can also be one things that prevents a person from gaining a federal law enforcement career or can potentially advance them forward. Almost all agencies at the federal level require a bachelor’s degree. In today’s time, many suggest even furthering that and getting a master’s degree because of the very high level of competition there is and it can only help separate you from the crowd (Walter, 2008). Federal law enforcement requires those degrees because they portray graduates with a degree such as a criminal justice degree mentally capable of handling a high demanding job. Degree holders are said be more able to critically think out situations and bring unbiased textbook opinions to the work field.…

Similarly, if a woman cannot consent, such as, being under the influence of alcohol or drugs or unconscious then, that too, is considered sexual assault. A popular form of sexual assault called “drug-facilitated sexual assault” is defined as, “unwanted sexual contact or intercourse that occurs when the victim is too intoxicated or high from alcohol and/or a drug given to her without her consent or against her wishes” (Lawyer et al., 2010, p.…

For most of my years in school I have been on the honor roll, I was a “strong” and hardworking student. For some reason I would pass most of my test without studying, I was an extremely well guesser. For a long time I didn’t understand most of the material in school, I just got by and somehow got good grades. It was because of one thing, the teachers didn’t care about the work we did. I went to minority schools where getting an A wasn’t a big deal, where studying was laughed at and speaking proper was only used when at a job interview.…
