As I stood at the dilapidated front door, I began to take a deep breath, trying to prepare myself for what might be on the other side, but before I could muster up the courage to knock a gray-haired gentleman cracked the door open, “Who’s there?”, he asked in a feeble voice. I explained that I was a nurse assistant and I was there to help, he then welcomed me into his home. When I stepped into the house Cockroaches scurried at my feet and the smell of necrotic tissue filled my nostrils - this man had not been cared for in many months. He lived in a low-income area of Richland County that has a primary care health professional shortage. I’m applying to the University of South Carolina School of Medicine because my vision aligns with that of the university- to help the medically underserved residents of South Carolina and our nation.

My goal while there was to integrate recent refugees into American society. My first task was to help the refugees better understand English, but language and cultural barriers made communication difficult. After weeks of frustration, I asked myself, “Why?” – I wasn’t getting paid and I wasn’t receiving college credit, but as I stepped back I realized that none of that mattered because for three hours a week these families had hope.
