I was attempting to prepare myself for the sizable slope that I thought to be my impending doom. When I departed from the lift I turned my skis to position myself at the brink of slope. Then I tipped my skis over the edge of the hill with much initial regret.
Throughout my years of skiing I had sprained joints, bruised limbs, and nearly broken bones. Despite my injuries, my goal remained untouched. I was determined to ski down the largest hill at Perfect North Slopes, Center Stage. For years I practiced turns, jumps, moguls, and I even learned to ski backwards. However, learning these skills never gave me the confidence

We sledded down the hill at top speeds and tumbled when we hit a bump. We let go of the sled when it hit the ramp and we flew through the air with no protection and we would hit the snow beneath us. I skidded towards the lake and dug my boots into the snow pushing against my feet. I continuously climbed to the top of the hill over and over again. Messay skidded down the hill on the bowl sled.…

“Let’s walk around and see if there’s a hill we can go up,” I grumbled miserably. We walked around the side, up and down two more unfriendly hills until we found a hill. It was steep, but what choice did we have. I had the girls stay below me, to try and stop the wagon if it dared to fall from my grasp. Every muscle in my body was screaming as I pulled the cart up and over a high tree root and up the hill.…

It all began at the base of that hill. There I stood, unabashed by the ever-tensening knot in the bottom of my stomach. The epitome of all of my fears stared me down as i stood in the shadow of that majestic, towering, powerful mountain. The immense winter wind shook me to my core. In the Alps, there was no freedom from shivering.…

It was straight up the side of a mountain with no end in sight. As I stared up I thought, this is not so bad, but little did I know that the next two miles would be a testament to mind over body. The climb up the mountain began with a forty pound sandbag carry. You had to pull yourself up the hill using roots and small trees. By the time the real climb had started my legs were already cramping.…

As we arrived, all you could see in the cove were boats lined up and tied together, people jumping from 30 feet into the water below, and the sound of people laughing and having a good time. We tied our jet skis to the side of my grandparent’s boat, took off our life vests, and jumped into the water. As we swam to the edge of the cliffs, I remember the sound of the waves crashing against them from people jumping and boats coming and going. Once we climbed out of the water and made our way up the steep cliff, I remember thinking, “I hope I don’t slip and fall”. Surprisingly, as clumsy as I am, we made it to the top with no problem.…

In my college career which has been around 4 years now, these first two weeks are the first of any trimester or semester that instead of being enrolled in classes, I’m enrolled in an internship. This is definitely a change from the norm but at the same time it is exciting as well. It gives me the opportunity to use or observe some of the material that I have learned so far in my classes at Johnson & Wales in a real scenario. This internship allows me as well to gain much needed additional experience in the sports and athletics industry and will give me a more holistic view of the athletic program. It will allow me to see many different roles and see from various projects what parts of athletics I like or dislike since I am overall still open for the future to a variety of roles in the sports industry…

We tumbled down the mountain slipping and sliding in the darkness we were moving with a purpose with new found strength and motivation we pushed on. We took our snowshoes off hoping to make better time by just sliding down the mountain rather than walking. As we approached our first river crossing I set down my pack and realized I had lost a snowshoe. Somewhere up the mountain I had dislodged it from my pack and before us was miles of deep snowfields that were totally impassable without snowshoes. Weighing in my predicament I knew this could totally end our chances of having banana bread tonight.…

I was born on February 25th 1998 at St Michael 's hospital in Toronto. I grew up in a part of Toronto called Bloor west village where I lived with my parents and my sister Lauren who is three years older than me. I attended Runnymede public school for both junior and senior kindergarten. My interests in my toddler years were T-ball, skiing and going to park with my best friend Carson. I learned to ski at a very young age, I was just 18 months when I first attempted to put on my sister equipment by myself but I legitimately started to ski at age 3 but later at age 5 made the switch to snowboarding.…
