Personal Reflective Essay: Entering High School

Conflicts occur frequently in any person’s life. The issues usually appear daily in a small magnitude, but certain obstacles can arise that engulf a large amount of time and emotional decision making. I have been fortunate in my upbringing and vicarious learning to not make as many harsh mistakes as my parents did, therefore putting me in a prosperous situation. However, I wasn’t fed off of a silver spoon. My parents set forth high expectations for me to ensure I was prepared for a college experience. I obtained the earliest job possible, a soccer referee at the age of 12, to start earning my own money through my own labor and to learn the value of spending versus saving money wisely. It was also assumed that I complete all of my school work by myself, reaching out to teachers, friends, or tutors if I wasn’t retaining the information. Math and …show more content…
English and history played harder to get A’s in the class, but I always managed to push myself towards the top. Entering high school, every social, academic, or athletic event seemed to be pushed down my throat. I became overwhelmed with all the commotion and I started to lose sight of what I already struggled in. As stated before, I’ve always been fortunate and determined towards my goals, so as my grade began to drop in my English courses, disappointment in myself arose. It hadn’t occurred before that I would need extra help in any subject. My pride was hurt, but I knew my expectation was to complete all of my courses with respectable grades. Attendance in English lunch tutoring became normal, sacrificing my free time with friends. I worked directly with my teacher on how she wanted us to respond to certain questions in the classroom, and more specifically how to formulate my own opinion towards free response writing or rhetorical essay topics for books. I didn’t notice a distinct change until I

My senior year could have not started any better. On July 30th, 2015 I get a call from Coach Brock Hayes from Louisiana College offering me a scholarship to play at the college level. Ever since I was small, I always dreamed about playing college football and it finally came to reality. Fall camp was getting ready to start, and I was so excited to get my senior season started. I put in so much work and effort to get into the position I was in, so I was not going to let my team down.…

Someone once said, "Suffer the pain of discipline or suffer the pain of regret." This essentially means that discipline will be difficult to manage but it’s a finer choice than regretting your decisions later on. School can be difficult, but the pain of the self-command and devotion will get you much further in your education than lackadaisical and deprecate. It seems to me that future freshmen with a hard work ethic and commitment should attend Early College High School because it saves the student time, money and you provides a safe atmosphere with a supportive audience. Not only is Early College High School a free program…

Many high school students, including myself, strive to get good grades and SAT scores, for the purpose of college admissions. However, Bruni conveys that college admissions often causes students to become demotivated, after working tirelessly through the process. He writes, “My fear is that these kids are always going to be evaluating their self-worth in terms of whether they hit the next rung society has placed in front of them at exactly the time that society has placed it. And that’s dangerous, because you’re going to slip and fall in your life.” (Bruni 72).…

Transitioning from middle school to high school is scary enough, not to mention finding out that your best friends won’t be attending that same school adds a little pressure on a pre-teen who, for the most part is really shy. When I first started high school I had a cousin who was a year older than me, she showed me around school and I ended up hanging out with her and her friends for a few months. Then she introduced me to some of her newer friends who were in the same grade as me. They were nice people and they got me through the first year of high school, but I never felt like I belonged to “their group”.…

It’s not every day that you volunteer to be humiliated, abused, and laid on by sweaty adolescent boys. Maybe you do; I don’t know your story. The point is that I personally wasn’t a huge fan of any of these things separately, let alone all in one wrestling practice. If you asked me in middle school how I would look back on my wrestling days, and how those days would develop me over the years, I would have shrugged.…

Since the first day, time has been flying really fast. Starting a fresh new day, meeting the same teachers and same old friends, I still cannot imagine that I am now a senior! In my senior year, there will definitely be a lot of challenges and obstacles for me to conquer, but I believe that as long as I do everything step by step, I can beat down the difficulties in this senior year. When I was in junior year, I often heard last year’s seniors told me how hard is it to come up with a senior project topic, and they kept on reminding me to start thinking of my topic and finding my mentors. Luckily, I had research method class last year, so I knew how to do my APA style references and I had many presentations experiences last year.…

High school. People say it’s either the best or worst four years of your life. Of course they never give you the details of what makes them the worst or best years. Which means, I, a terrified 8th grader convince myself that they will be the worst four years of my life. Honestly it is easy to guess that.…

Ever since my first AP course, sophomore year, I disliked anything that had to with the class for “advanced students.” It was not that the teachers were awful and putrid, but rather that I was the one who despised the rigor and work that came with becoming a full blown AP scholar. However, my junior year was quite different. I was still in AP courses, but I got to taste the sweetness of dual credit classes, as well as the fun that came with it.…

Growing up in inner city Baltimore was not easy at all. I have seen so many horrifying things at such a young age. Countless times I have seen crackheads slumped over like zombies walking throughout the neighborhoods I called home. I have been to countless memorial services, vigils, and funerals for people who were senselessly murdered in the streets. I have even been grazed by a stray bullet during a routine drive-by while playing in my front yard.…

Growing up is internationally known as one of the hardest periods in a person’s lifetime. Everything’s changing, the people you’ve known all your life are no longer acting like themselves, changing schools can be very difficult, and friends are lost. Sophomore year was the year that I became really lazy because I believed I had nothing important to do. It was a year where I started to stand up for myself and speak up about situations I didn't approve of. It was also a period of time where I saw the potential that I have, and also showed me how some people can continue to try to make you feel insecure about yourself even when you are doing good things in your life. That year I started Crossfit to get in shape for basketball with my older cousin, Shaun, and I saw one of my old band teachers there. So it was kind of fun to see all these great people come together to work out and push each other.…

Growing up with catholic education, I was primarily taught the importance of reading and writing. The generic hamburger 5-paragraph essay format was on our 10 commandments of writing and so was the idea of a minimum 6-8 sentences per paragraph. Entering high school English class, I found myself in a different situation than most typical high school students. My school offered International Baccalaureate English classes; these classes were structured differently than that of AP or Standard English. In this class, we were left to fend on our own.…
