Throughout the first three years of my high school career, I participated in varsity cheerleading. when I joined the team as a freshman, I felt very young and inexperienced, for I was constantly surrounded by older girls. However, as the year progressed, being able to watch and learn from them aided greatly in my personal development. They taught me responsibility, leadership, how to interact with a diverse group of people, and many other important life skills. With each passing year, I found myself feeling more and more prepared to fill their shoes.
In order to teach the team leadership skills, my cheer coach would put team members in charge of teaching dances and cheers. I’ve always been a fast learner, so I, along with a few other upperclassmen, was chosen to help teach new girls cheers and dances Teaching dances to a group of fourteen girls was not an easy task. I had to be very patient and understanding throughout the process. I learned to step back and put myself in the other girls’ shoes because not everybody has a good memory when it comes to dancing.

Stunting was a group activity and things did not always go the way I wanted: there were a lot of successes, but there were also a lot of failures. I would get very frustrated when a stunt would fall, for I wanted my group to always be successful. However, I quickly learned that failure was inevitable and it was essential for learning. Cheer taught me that if I used failure as a learning opportunity, they would always lead to success. Because of this new thought process, I became more patient and willing to accept failure. Cheer taught me the leadership skills of patience and

I earned my first leadership role at the age of two. At that age, I became my sister’s role model. It was up to me to teach her the tricks of the trade for everything-- from tying her shoes to studying for her first math test. Although I didn’t have any designated leadership positions during my early years of high school, it was the similarly intimate, accidental moments of leadership that colored my participation in my extracurriculars.…

Many times in our lives we have the choice to be a leader or a follower. One of the many times that I have chosen a leadership role is when I was on my competitive cheerleading team. During one of our first competitions half of the team forgot our routine and the stunts all fell. While everyone stood there in silence I started saying the words and going through the stunts and routine and everyone followed my lead and we pushed through the embarrassment. I decided to take this leadership role because I knew that everyone was too afraid to be the only one to say the words in fear that no one else would say them too, so I knew that if I put my dignity aside for a moment our team still had a chance to shine and get a good score on our round.…

I used to be so afraid of failure that I wouldn’t even challenge myself. I thought it was better to excel in classes that I knew I could pass than to challenge myself and accept the grade I earned. Cheer taught me that being a student-athlete doesn’t mean that I have to take the easy way out. I took my first AP class during my junior year and was able to ace it using the qualities I learned through cheer. I even challenged myself further by taking two college courses and an AP class during my senior…

During my freshman year, I participated in teaching in the cheer clinic. I was assigned certain younger kids and taught them cheers and chants for football games. By standing up in front of the little kids, I lead them through the motions and set an example of what it should look like. I showed characteristics of leadership by remaining optimistic and not getting frustrated with the younger kids, and also by the responsibility of making sure they each knew the cheer and by watching over them. This is one example of how I showed leadership at school.…
