Multi Modal Strengths

I have taught multiple sections of Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, and Information Security courses. In these discipline areas, I have adopted a multi-modal delivery of course materials, in an attempt to engage a variety of learning styles that are influenced by personal and cultural backgrounds. In my courses, I have balanced individual and group projects to allow the students to work in teams and on individual projects. I have worked to deliver a variety of assessment materials to allow different strengths of the student be challenged. This has led to an observed greater grasp of the basic course competencies with this interaction and a greater attendance rate from my students when they are engaged through this multi-level approach.

I have worked with a variety of students, including the traditional student, first generation college students, displaced worker looking to retrain, foreign students taking classes in the USA, and parents looking to finish their degree. All of my students have shown different levels of technology understanding and how they comprehend the material. I have made it a point never to feel that I am inconvenienced by any question or request a student may ask, as I may not understand their specific need. I enjoy my role as a professor, and I want to ensure my students succeed. In an effort to help them succeed, I want to meet them where they are in my delivery methodology and understanding their background. I have worked to deliver a multi-modal approach to engage various learning styles and comprehension levels. I strive to ensure I do not deliver a “one size fits all” education

As my interviewees were explaining to me their opinions and views, I noticed a lot of connections between what they were saying and what I have learned or talked about in class. There is never a bad question when there are discussions in class, and the questions themselves are valued more than the answers. My professor uses a variety of teaching methods because each student has a Personal Learning Plan and different learning preferences. This is seen in our “What’s MY Style?” mini assignment from week one, where we learned about our personal metacognitions.…

"Phil Schlecty (1994), says students who are engaged exhibit three characteristics: (1) they are attracted to their work, (2) they persist in their work despite challenges and obstacles, and (3) they take visible delight in accomplishing their work" (Strong, Silver, & Robinson, 1995). As I read Levin & Scrum's (2012) description of New Tech High School, I could see each of these characteristics being exhibited on their campus. Kennedy et al. (2006) (as cited in Papa, 2011) stated that schools are not prepared to educate a new generation of students who are well-versed in emerging technology, and this is incompatible with current teaching practices (p. 131). The New Tech High School in Napa Valley, utilized advanced technological and teaching…

Domenech, Sherman, and Brown (2016) begin by introducing the possibility of transforming education. They give examples of personalization in many areas of our everyday life. Department stores have personal shoppers, hotels stress the importance of personalized service, and health care/treatment plans tailor to the specific needs of the patient. Our world has become personalized in many ways and yet our 21st century classroom has changed very little since the Industrial Revolution.…

My experience has also made me understand that even though students should have learned a subject in the pre requisite courses, they don’t necessarily remember it or immediately make the connection to the new material I’m teaching. I ensure I review and bring them to where they can move forward in their learning. One of the hallmarks of Michigan Tech is its hands-on curriculum, and we see great success with a “learning by doing” teaching method. Our students are eager to get their hands dirty through active learning. I’m also always ready to adjust my teaching methods to match my students’ learning styles as much as I can; And, that’s easier to do during one-on-one meetings that I make available to students during and over and above my usual…

A debate or Socratic seminar might work best for this class and especially these three students because of how vocal they are. I also undertook revision of undergraduate syllabus based on inputs from various agencies. During this process I have learnt that teaching is learning from multiple perspective and while teaching the central focus should be student learning. Hence, I have evolved my teaching philosophy based on four aspects: interactively teaching, creative thinking, providing resources used for teaching and supporting a wide diversity of students.…
