Personal Reflection: Therapeutic Assessments

Decent Essays
My strengths were to name a few, establishing and maintaining a therapeutic rapport with client and relevant others to gather information; using appropriate information gathering tools and methods to develop an occupational profile; adapting assessments according to the client needs, precautions, and level of care; and seeking assistance from experience professionals in situations beyond entry-level to acquire about a client occupational performance. My weaknesses included to name a few, communicating with policy-makers and advocating with relevant parties regarding clients’ needs; adjusting intervention methods, technique, and/or task demands during session in response to variances from a child’s or caregiver’s anticipated responses; and understanding indications and contraindications interventions for enabling feeding and eating skills based on …show more content…
There were a lot of questions especially pediatric questions that I feel like I do not have any skills in that certain area because I just started pediatric rotation and the experience have not presented itself. At my last SNF rotation and my current rotation, only the speech therapist worked on feeding. I know additional studying is needed in my weak areas to gain knowledge. In general, there were questions that I generally have clinical skills under supervision but I felt like I need more practice to stand on my own and implement the skill at entry-level competence. I am grateful for this assignment as it showed me my areas of weakness and now have to figure out a way to incorporate these results into my studying for the NBCOT. The results from this assessment can help me become a better practitioner. I will take the advice of completing self-assessments regularly once I begin working as it will allow me to know in what areas I need to do a little more research. This will help be to maintain competent in all areas of occupational

I also learned how to combine and practice my assessments that I learned up to week 8. I was able to hear crackling sounds in the lungs of a resident who has COPD. Moreover, my biggest challenge this week was understanding everything that I should assess by observing the resident’s diagnoses. I knew some signs and symptoms of some diseases but I did not have access to a computer to look it up. I would ask some of the LPN’s, but they seemed a bit annoyed to answer some of my questions.…

When it comes to understanding yourself and your personality on a deeper level than normally, you must take personal stories into perspective that have shaped your life while growing up. According to McAdams, “defining oneself through a personal story is an act of psychological and social responsibility” (Engler 2009). Psychological and social responsibility relate to how you act onto actions around you and how you tie society into your viewpoint of the world. In other words, explaining yourself through a story can show several things such as how your emotions played an affect, the type of response you displayed to something that happened, and as well as the lessons you learned through a personal but also social aspect. In addition, McAdams…

Clinical Reflection: Group Meeting I arrived thirty minutes earlier for the meeting scheduled at seven that evening, but the parking lot was almost full and teeming with activity. There were people talking, laughing, and some were loitering, wandering aimlessly before proceeding through a discreet door; ten minutes prior to the scheduled start. Hence, the scene reminded me more of an enthusiastic crowd being ushered in before the movie start or an eager bunch queueing up for the latest iPhone rather than a weary horde, about to face intervention. That was not what I had envisioned this discussion to be, much less, what I had expected. Moreover, behind those inconspicuous door, only made distinguishable by a small double A sign, was a…

Reflection is a practice of recalling and analysing an event that has already took place, and speculating about what has occurred and finding different and more appropriate approaches that will help improve your decisions in the future (Daly, Speedy & Jackson, 2014, p. 120). The main focus of this essay is to discuss my reasons for choosing nursing as a career, along with discussing the importance and benefits of reflective practice in nursing, and also how I might use reflective practice in my future career of nursing. As I was growing up, I always had a passion for wanting to help people in need and making a difference in the lives of everyone around me. Hence, the reason why I chose nursing as a career path, as it seemed like the perfect…

Everyone encounters moments in life that can be challenging to manage. Many use adaptive or maladaptive coping mechanisms to handle the situation at hand. Although it is best when the person copes by using problem-solving techniques or an adaptive mechanism, using maladaptive ways is a concern. Moreover, this reflection depicts Mr. Ed 's story, a patient who has diabetes, on how he began to contemplate the changes needed in his lifestyle by experiencing motivational interviewing (MI). MI is the art of coaching a client to make changes using therapeutic communication (Dart, 2011).…

Thus far, I have learned many important aspects of becoming an effective therapist. One of the major parts of training involves evaluation and feedback from supervisors or peers. I think evaluations are an important part of training because it provides feedback to areas, which you are doing well in, and areas in which you will need improvement. I believe that without evaluations, we as therapist cannot grow into effective therapist. To date I cannot think of any job or career that does not use “end of the year evaluations”.…

This essay is a reflection on my anticipated health care practice. It was required that I choose a group that was effected by the diversity of ethnicities, religions, genders, sexualities and abilities in the Australian population. I chose to do a mental disability, which was dementia. Four components will be addressed into this essay; the barriers to health care access and good care, my attitude, values and beliefs towards those with dementia, culturally safe health care practices that I might undertake with Individuals with dementia, and how I, as a health care provider could advocate for people with dementia at a population level. I noticed that people with dementia suffer from multiple barriers to health care access and good care.…

An exercise in class allowed me to understand my own reasoning for helping others as well as what may be my own selfish reasons for seeking this profession. For example, at one point in the exercise, I broke ground into my own self-assessment and found insight that I was partially seeking the profession for money and for my savior complex. I felt that this observation of myself showed that I was overall, functioning normally with both healthy and minimal unhealthy motivations. Another concern that came across my mind is when I have a…

In matching Janet’s posture, language and tone, I reflected back to Janet her external behaviours. When I commented to Janet “and because you know that at the base of it’s not you it’s him” I put into my words her thoughts regarding his behaviour. Janet’s response of “well that’s the thing, I don’t let it affect me anymore…” allowed her to then explore why her reactions to her ex-husband had changed. I found this skill of counselling particularly difficult in this session due to our friendship.…

Out of all the theories we’ve covered through the course of the semester. Person-centered therapy has managed to capture my attention the most, and here’s why. Trust is something that’s automatically given to the client who is seen as the sole contributor of being able to solve his or her own problems without the assistance of direct intervention. Now, when I first heard of this therapy I immediately thought. “So, what exactly does the therapist do again?”…

I have never experienced therapy, but always had imagined how the process would be. I pictured a couch and a therapist on a fancy chair like in the movies, and I would just lay there and vent about my problems. Initially, I was very excited to see someone whom I can speak with and possibly help me resolve my issues, but that excitement did not last long. Anxiety kicked in as I got a phone call from the therapist, informing me that we would start next week. I started to become very nervous about the whole client-therapist relationship, for what if I did not connect with.…
