My Reflection Of My Writing In My Class

Improved Essays
With the 2016 fall semester coming to a close for IPFW I have been studiously viewing my completed portfolio in search for identifying my voice that I had created within our class together. After examining my work throughout this course I came to realize that my voice and writing has had a drastic change to my previous writings. Before taking Creative Writing I had worked on many other papers and had taken a separate course similar to this; however, the papers written in those classes didn’t compare to what I had previously written. Looking at my drafts now I can see that I have been able to open up to having a more connective impact on readers then my previous works. This sense of writing was being done through my writing in the discovery …show more content…
Most of this has to be credited to my peers within the class as they had shaped the idea of realism in their papers, resulting in having my final drafts reflect their aspects. As for the core ideas of my pieces the inspiration has come from multiple stories and events. The one that stand out the most, that to some may be seen as obvious, would be the inspiration of Nightveil: Alice in Wonderland. The imagination and creation of the land of wonders was a huge driving force in my dark, twisted creation of it. Yet it also played a role in showing how characters within a story can still be relatable to readers, even in situations and settings that are considered unimaginable to be in. The sense of realism in the characters and how they can be relatable in both Alice in Wonderland and my peers creative non-fiction stories resulted in me viewing that as a new way to open myself up to adding creativity in a different …show more content…
With my weakest strength being the revision my strongest strength is the creativity and ideas behind each story. Although the ideas I have may be sporadic at first, the themes and ideas that do stick well together turn out to contain deeper elements within the content of the writing. This is easily portrayed in my description of why Nightveil is the most prominent short story I have written thus far: In short, a story about a deaf girl being kidnapped by an old maniacal geezer and taken to a fantasy world of his creation. This, along with my second short story Support, show off my strength of creativity in recapturing these alternative stories or events into my own

Coming into English 101, I really did not know what to expect. This was my first college writing class so I had no idea what it was going to be like. In high school I would have considered myself to be a decent writer, not the best or not the worst. I would never impress anyone with my writing skills but I could still come across as educated on my topic.…

My favorite author as a child had to be Richelle Mead and, later, Edgar Allen Poe. Reading their work has inspired my writing style. Being sucked into their worlds, seeing what they saw, filled a desire deep within myself. I craved to have a book of my own, to create a character and live through them, and escape from my own reality for awhile. I’ve written many stories so far, and I’ve produced a film called “Donut Druggies”,…

To me, writing is just ok, nothing special. It definitely isn’t something I get excited about. My first formal writing class was in 6th grade, where we followed The Institute for Excellence in Writing’s curriculum. My fellow classmates and I mainly wrote short, 1-3 paragraph reports on various historical topics. I did well in these classes, I just never really enjoyed the process of writing.…

I’ve notice from over the semester is I have made wonderful progress and I care more about what I write, I put more feelings into it. My growth as a writer connects to my growth as a person by showing I have enhanced my vocabulary and I learned how to work out conflicts in a good productive way. These books were my first look into writing for recreation and not just as some school assignment. These worlds created through words encouraged me to find more complex ways to describe the subjects that I wrote about instead of just using the quickest and simplest words that could express the same message. This new descriptive way of writing eventually caused me to meet many young writers. Though I was not always one for writing in my spare time I often enjoyed reading the work of other writers, especially friends and classmates. Due to the knowledge I had gained through my many hours of reading I was often asked to read and edit others work.…

My strengths as a writer are coming up with good topics to write about. I also find really good evidence to support my claims. I tries to utilize my strengths as much as I could in my papers, the only one where my strengths strived the most is my Rhetorical Analysis essay. That was my favorite essay to write because finding evidence was easy to find because it was right there in the article. I also felt I could be more expressive in paper.…

Knowing I had to aim for a different audience this time around really affected my writing. When my tone for the original paper was rather informal and even somewhat fun, now I had to write for the APA, a group of people who take this line of work very seriously (as they should). Due to this, I gave my arguments a more serious tone, and I even expanded my vocabulary a bit to give a good impression. If I want the APA to listen to me, I should write in a tone they would use. I was careful about the sources I used for this.…

Project 2 Toni Morrison, bell hooks, and James Baldwin are all writers, professionals crafting fully realized people living in black and white, and poetically weave humor and personal tragedy into their essays about injustice. In the past, I always avoided calling myself a writer because I simply could not compare with them or their contemporaries. Throughout the years, I realized that forbidding myself from using that title was not a humble act, but instead, limiting myself from strengthening my writing through making excuses. Writing did not come naturally to me. I could do the bare minimum.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Throughout the course of the semester, my ability as a writer has increased at a slight level. The semester began on a rough patch with my initial submission of assignment one, but that was quickly resolved in my revisions. Since that point, my grades have been relatively similar. I would accredit this improvement to the feedback I received on the first assignment, although some of my faults could be seen in the next assignment as well. Since that point, however, my writing has been relatively consistent.…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…

The writing process is different and unique to all individuals; many people follow the ideal steps of prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing as opposed to others taking shortcuts, skipping steps, and going straight to editing. The writing process is the course one takes to get from prewriting to the publication of their essay; since everyone is a different, their writing process will also be different. For me, I believe that following the ideal writing process steps are a tremendous help to organizing my essay and spacing out the work throughout the time the assignment is assigned. To begin writing an essay I must first prewrite; to prewrite is to brainstorm ideas from the prompt by outlining, diagramming, clusterings, or…
