Personal Reflection On Social Work

I have a couple of friends that are CPS worker and has been for about 15 years now. We would get together and talk about our jobs. Some of the things they have spoken about when going to the home and court regarding children are horrible. I often ask them how to they handle the abuse and neglect of some of the children on their case load. They states the job can take its toll on you after a while you will get burn out quick but, they want to help the children because they states it is not fair for some of these parents to have children and treat them worse than any animal on the street. They states it is hard to leave this job at work because it is hard for them to take a child or children from their parents because the children do not understand what is going on they just see us tearing apart their family. After a while I can just imagine that at some point you will become preoccupied with the images of trauma, lack of concentration, despair and recurring regrets or guilt worries did you do the right thing was this the right choice for this family. It also talked about the history of child welfare workers and how they survived traumatic stress through stoicism and humor and those who could not make it left and found other careers. When it comes to the organizational problems in child welfare there is no department or administration designated to manage trauma support for the staffs. Child welfare staffs are given stress days off so that they can take time off from work without using sick or vacation days.
