Personal Reflection On Shadowing Education

Decent Essays
For my shadowing experience I shadowed a 3rd grade two teachers Ms.Chin and Ms. Guerrero at a school named Global Family Elementary. Ms. Chin is the english teacher: she teaches social studies and math. Ms.Guerrero the spanish teacher, teaches science and writing. They switch classes each day and they both teach two classes. I chose to shadow a teacher at Global because it would have been painless to get there. I shadowed Ms. chin and Ms. Guerrero for a week in their classrooms switching half day in each day in both english and spanish classrooms. I was gifted to get to know two bilingual classes throughout the week and follow the teachers schedules and observe how they organized the kids for the following year.

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015 I did my observation of Paul Dunbar Middle School. Some of the first things I noticed when I entered the school was how enormous the school’s population is and how the school was mostly Hispanic and African American students. I arrived at the front desk and was asked by the assistant principal what was my preference of classroom. She then proceeded to take me the section of the school where the ESE classes are held. Rodriguez grew up in a Spanish speaking family thriving and eager to expand his education and vocabulary in the “loud, booming with confidence” English language. According to Rodriguez, bilingual educationists have strong disbelief in the idea that schools should be assimilated with bilingual education because the students lack “a degree of ‘individuality’” This sense of individuality is absent in public society because often your heritage sets you apart from most others around you.…

Before starting this assignment I thought that it would not be an issue when finding two teachers that have had an ELL student. This was not the case because I had trouble finding two teachers that had taught an ELL student and I believe it was because we live in an area that does not have many ELL students. After asking a few teachers their experiences with working with ELL students, I finally found two teachers that both gave me a great answers to the interview questions. The first teacher I interviewed had an experience in two different placements in Ottumwa. She had the opportunity to work with lower and upper grades, which she said were very different experiences.…

While at Rutgers I have had the opportunity to expand my knowledge on living systems from the level of a single molecule to an entire organism. I have been able to do this both in the classroom and while shadowing a physician. While these two types of learning are very different, they both are vital aspects of having a holistic education in the biological sciences. Through my major in Cell Biology and Neuroscience, I have also been able to build on my biology foundation by delving more deeply into neuroscience, the facet of the life sciences that most interests me. I also have had hands-on experience working at the cellular level in my laboratory and have developed a comfort with the material allowing me to explain it to others.…

lessons, activities, room or school décor? There were not many cultural decorations anywhere in the classroom, it was mostly what they were learning at the time and rules. The information they were learning did not specifically relate to their cultural backgrounds, but they read the story of the boy who cried wolf and the students related that to their selves and how if they too many times people will not believe them when they are telling the truth. As a future educator, I have an obligation to cultivate interdependent relationships between my students and me. The students’ values, cultures and stories should be an emphasized component in this relationship. I am excited about the opportunity to participate in the English Teaching Assistant Program Spain, as it will allow me to develop ways to foster a greater capacity to connect with the students of my classroom with a Hispanic background. Rockefeller was a supporter of this principle saying, “in order to appreciate cultures of another nation, one needs to go there, know the people and mingle with the culture of that country”. I believe going to the origin of the language and culture will better allow me to master the necessary language skills that in turn will benefit these students as well as my future students.…
