Personal Reflection On Psychoeducational Groups

Improved Essays
As a member of the psychoeducational group that focuses on stress management I felt that the atmosphere was very inviting for the initial stage of the group, because group leader Cindy created a very welcoming and inviting climate with engaging activities to ease every member into the process of being in group therapy. Cindy was able to facilitate the dimensions of group behavior by modeling healthy communication, and offering genuineness to each member. By clearly establishing group procedures and rules she was able to quickly move into the topic without hesitation from the members.
I feel I am a very social group member who is quick to trust, as evident by my willingness to share and disclose with other members of the group. I do still think I may talk a bit too much, which I will continue to be mindful of moving forward with each meeting.
Overall I am very satisfied with our initial meeting because every member seemed to be open and engaging, we seemed to bonded relatively quickly as a group and started to offer one another support. Steps I believe might be beneficial for future meetings would be to focus on a specific topic or stress source to accomplish a more defined goal.

There were no moments of awkward silence or obvious mistrust, as members we were open to disclose relatively quickly with one another. We have already started to develop relationships with each other and are learning how to relate and be supportive. I can tell just after the first meeting that as a whole our group will be a chatty bunch, because after the topic was introduced we all kind of picked it up and started dealing with it in our own ways but together, which may be the norm from here on

Co-facilitated session plan For the purpose of this assignment, I propose to approach the hypothetical planning of a co-facilitated session with another party in three stages; pre-session, during the session and post- session. Pre-session I would consider the pre-session planning of a co-facilitated session with another party to be an imperative part of the process. As we would both need to work collaboratively throughout the process to help the group achieve goals, the main objective would be for us to meet well in advance of the meeting in order to get to know each other and establish a trusting and respectful relationship, whereby we would welcome constructive feedback and have the ability to work through any differences which may arise.…

Manifestaciones (Manifestations) Manifestaciones or short for Mani is a leadership retreat hosted by the Center for Latino Arts and Culture (CLAC) located on College Avenue. Although it is expected that this retreat is only for Latinos since it is hosted by the CLAC, anyone from any race can go because although the retreat is Latino-oriented it is not Latino exclusive. There is an application that every potential participant must fill out and the participants are chosen based on their responses on the application. Because of limited space, not everyone is allowed to go but I was fortunate enough to be chosen as one of the participants.…

The article discussed and described a psychoeducational group model aimed at survivors of sexual assault. The group was a held at a local Midwestern University and consisted over a 9-week time frame, in which group members learned coping skills and positive self-care strategies. The group used a combination of education and cognitive techniques to empower its members, reduce isolation, increase self-esteem and validate the feelings and victimization experience of group members. The facilitators allowed the group members to work together to brainstorm group guidelines and potential topics for the group, this is an essential component for setting the tone of the group and gives members a sense of inclusion. Group members could share as much or…

The atmosphere was very welcoming, it seemed more like a casual get together rather than a meeting. The flow was very well organized and the format was well put together, similar to a lesson plan. There were hardly any pauses, it was just a continuous conversation. No one over talked anyone, every individual was being heard. The members were very supportive and attentive to each other.…

When an individual comes to know Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior it marks the end of a stage in their life with the death of their innate natural man. However, the ending here is not in and of itself the end. On the contrary, death of the natural man gives birth to the spiritual man.…

A week ago today, I sent my fellow peer teachers a pdf copy of a journal article I intended for them to read before coming to the seminar today. The title of the article is Current Perceptions of the Role of Dental Hygienists in Interdisciplinary Collaboration. I asked my colleagues to highlight the concepts they find interesting or ideas that they don’t agree with if they find any. I started our seminar with an introduction of our topic and the journal. I then proceeded with what I thought of the article.…

When starting a group I introduce the group topic and myself, explain and hand out everything needed, and emphasized respect for others during the group, this is how I feel I created the sacred space. Stating some rules of respecting others, not saying negative things if someone is sharing something personal, offer support are a few rules that help create common ground. At Sheppard Pratt, it was important for adolescents to not feel alone and to have their feelings validated. So I frequently asked group members to share what they are working on in the hospital or, if they were comfortable with it, to share what brought them to the hospital; in doing this it helped others realize they are not alone and created common ground between peers. For example if a patient opened up in group that she self harms, this could really help someone else struggling with the same thoughts to go to her and ask what helps them cope with self injurious…

I have never been a part of a formal group meeting; however, I have participated in informal group discussions. Prior to my sibling being diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, someone within my nuclear family unit organized a family meeting that took place in the dining room. The family members sat around the circular table and addressed their concerns with his problem behavior. There were no formal procedures to guide the conversation but instead family members would interject when they felt inclined to do so. My father assumed the facilitator role and informally greeted the group and provided us with an overview of the purpose of the meeting.…

Overall, I was extremely happy with the effort my group put into this project. In terms of attending the group meetings, everyone was present and participated in the discussion. The first meeting took place on a Sunday afternoon at Baruch and the second meeting took place on a weeknight in the form of a Google Hangout. The times and places of these meetings alone displayed every group members’ commitment to the project, effort to accommodate for scheduling conflicts, and effort to ensure they are contributing their fair share to the group regardless the time or day of the week. At these meetings, we discussed ways to engage the crowd and critiqued each other’s slides and presentations.…

I have been taking this class for nearly three months. During three months, I learned a lot about small group communication, especially the group climate and interaction are going well in our group. Our group works well on building and keeping positive attitude to our assignments and supportive climate. Each group member devotes to create an atmosphere that our group is the best group. For instance, our group member Erik and Jo always said some words of praise and encouragement, such as “we are really a good group”.…

Due to the fact that this was the first group meeting of the semester, the beginning stage of the interaction was incredibly important. The beginning stage impacted the rest of the session, as for the first time a group of strangers were meeting, and attempting to deduce all of our similarities, and our differences. Therefore, providing introductions and facts about ourselves really assisted the group in being able to understand one another, and move on in a comfortable manner. Furthermore, the beginning stage was especially interesting as a facilitator, as the group collectively had a chance to learn about what we currently know about social work group practice, and what we can build upon going on in the semester. Understanding one another’s strengths and weaknesses is important in developing comradery in a group, and was especially important in the beginning…
