Personal Reflection On My Writing Assignment

Improved Essays
The writing assignments that I’ve had throughout my years at CJ fell into two camps. The first being assignments in which the prompt and how to go about expanding on the prompt were explicitly laid out. For me these were the research papers, and the literary analysis and argument essays. These comprised of the majority of things that I’ve written in my academic career. The next camp of assignments fall under the category of minimal explicit prompting and more “choose-your-own-prompt” assignments. Creative writing allowed me to experiment more with the second camp of writing. The majority of assignments in this class being set up this way was something that took some adjustment for me as a writer with me having spent most of my prior experience …show more content…
Most of the stuff we worked on first semester were things that I tend to associate with “creative writing”- writing short stories, poems, etc. While I liked exploring these genres, I think I really started to enjoy creative writing when we got into creative nonfiction with the profile, the website project, and the visual essay. I think I enjoyed these assignments more because they allowed me to integrate the prose style that I was I used to writing in a more creative and more personal way. I especially enjoyed the website project. I’ve always wondered what “behind-the-scenes” work goes into making my favorite fashion editorial and aesthetic blogs and I’ve always wanted to try my hand at it. I tried to play the part of a blogger with the website project with picking topics that fell under different categories and appeals per week, as well as making and producing visuals to accompany the each of the posts. My weakness of picking ideas on picking something new to write about each week was the most challenging. Posts that I had direct inspiration such as my “Fashion Field Trip Post” and my “Pantone Color Report” posts were posts that were a lot easier to write versus some of the other things I posted. Above all, having to keep the blog updated every week, definitely made me see how keeping a blog can be a full time job for some

I wrote one “source-based argumentative essay” in high school: my final essay from sophomore English. The guidelines were to write a four to eight page paper on any topic of your choice, but the thesis of the paper had to come across clearly. At the time, my personal goals were to write about something no one else would, as well as get an A in the class. As a future collegiate writer, I feel as though I have the habits and potential strengths to be successful, but my biggest weakness is that I do not know how to write a professional essay and I am a reluctant editor.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

I am both nervous and stressed that I will not fully understand the requirements of the writing assignment. When I think of creating a research paper I worry that I will not use enough words to get my point across. Before starting at Belhaven my emails were anything but detailed and at least once a week I was reminded to use more words. With each class, I learn more tools that will help me with my writing. I have learned to create a formal outline.…

Over the last four essays, my ability to write has improved exponentially from the beginning of the year. Through the four essays I have learned valuable skills that will be the support for future essays. On the two beginning essays my ability to use vocabulary and other valuable skills was improving. By being supplied by information from the instructor, and fellow classmates I was able to spot my weaknesses in my writing and improve where improvement was needed. As the semester progress each essay improved upon the last as self reflection and reflection from others was used wisely.…

No matter how many times I’ll have to write one, reflections are always difficult. They make you look at yourself and your work and dissect every good and bad aspect of it. Sometimes it’s hard because just the task of analyzing one’s own work can be tricky, but my personal biggest issue is learning how to fix what I find specifically wrong. Part of this is due to my own writing style, along with the bad habits that come with it. However, throughout this class, I have learned more about how to relay my ideas more concisely to my audience and in a more summarized form.…

My mind feels like a 1000 piece puzzle missing a piece. I can’t simply find the right words to say to start this paper. It is always like this when freewriting; the idea of freewriting in and of itself frightens me. Never able to put the words in my head onto paper in a way that it can be read eloquently by others. My hands start to cramp automatically at the idea of freewriting.…

This writing assignment constituted of reading a book from the AP-satisfied reading list, and then producing a book report that provided a brief summary and a review of the book selected. This assignment’s purpose is to estimate my ability of analytical reading skills, organizational skills (in writing), and my ability to create a book report that satisfies the guidelines presented for the book report assignment. When I first started the rhetoric, inquiry and critical writing course I was unaware of the specific flaws in my writing assignments. During this course not only did I figure out my own style of writing, but I also learned about other writing styles and how I could incorporate them into my own writing. The constructive criticism given by my peers and professor improved my way of writing. The hardest obstacle I had to face while writing was staying on topic. I gave too much information about a general topic instead of focusing on a small portion and brainstorming from there.…

My experiences with writing have been somewhat limited until I signed up for English 101. I have to admit that English was not my favorite subject in school. I never felt like I was any good at writing, and spelling is still not my strong suit. I always felt like I was better at math. My attitude towards writing was my biggest hindrance to my success.…

No matter where you go or went to school, you always have some type of English class that forces you to write papers. These papers usually has to be a certain way or over a certain topic. To me that was a pretty big problem for me because I could do free writing easy, but when you tell me to write about something that I don 't have any interest in and I have to follow your “rules”, then I will just try to blow it off. I have always hated the way Professors and the world had this “image” of their version of a “perfect” essay. I always messed up on the rules like where to put my commas or semicolons, that to me is the hardest part to not have a run- on sentence.…

To be completely honest I have mixed feelings about writing and I don’t really have any memorable experiences that made me feel this way, it is just the experiences that I have had with the subject while trying to apply it. I struggle with what to write down mostly and creativity in general and I don’t really excel at any part of it. If I were to say I “excel” at anything it would be revising my work and adding to it. At the end of the semester I hope that I have relearned some key writing elements that lack of practice has caused me to lose.…

My History As A Writer Throughout my lifetime I have come to love and absolutely hate writing. The reasoning of the assignment or topic has a lot to do with my affinity and disgust. Although learning new things, like writing, was something that I loved doing in elementary school, that all changed when it was daily implemented. As an art form I recently come to love writing down my thoughts, ideas, opinions and stories.…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…
