Personal Reflection On CST And Dementia

During my third week of interning, I got to experience some more data entry using Excel and the APEX database. I continued to learn more about these programs and update them frequently. I resumed researching previous KCOM graduates and finding their current place of employment. I then worked through the online CST modules for training and drove to St. Louis with Jessica. On Wednesday, we attended the 29th Annual SLU Geriatric Institute: CST session. This conference was very interesting and I learned a lot about CST and dementia. I also continued working on the 2019 Master Excel Workbook for elders who have participated in the IPHP and CCC programs and elders who want to be included in the future. This week was a very interesting learning experience …show more content…
These modules helped explain exactly what CST is and the purpose it serves. The modules gave information about dementia and how to manage patients with different forms of dementia. What I did was watch five online CST modules to receive training before attending the SLU conference. So what- the impact this had on me was the ability to be prepared for the SLU CST training session. This allowed me to have background information about CST and dementia before receiving training from real people at SLU. Now what- I have learned a lot about CST and how to implement it. I also learned a lot about the different types of dementia and how to handle patients with dementia. As an outcome, I hope I am able to provide this therapy to elderly individuals in the future and help with their dementia. This is all evidence-based, so it can really make an impact. This task relates to sub-competency 3.3.6: Deliver health education/promotion as …show more content…
Andrews. This activity will be implemented by the AHEC office and will include students and elders who sign up to attend. This activity will include breakfast food and a coffee station. The topic for this Service Saturday is Checkers Day. Students and elders will play games of checkers and switch with other people and the winners will receive prizes at the end. Many elders grew up playing checkers so this activity will allow them to have a life-review, while also engaging in conversation with current students. Students will be able to interact with elders and not refer to them as just patients. They could even dress up in checkered clothing to celebrate the holiday if they wanted to. What I did was plan a Service Saturday activity for September. I researched “holidays” in September and found a list of unique holidays for everyday of the month. I chose Checkers Day because students and elders can easily engage in conversation, which is the point of this service activity. This game does not require too much thinking, so it should not be too difficult for the elders to play. Elders can work on memory recall, mental stimulation, language stimulation, relationship building, and involvement. So what- the impact I have on this is that I planned this service activity out and came up with the theme. I think this will be beneficial because the students and elders will eat breakfast and play games with

This paper centers on: the progressive changes that occur with dementia especially for individuals with Down Syndrome (DS); the various types of dementia and a focus on Alzheimer’s disease (AD); assessments specifically for the IDD population; and the importance of creating a support system for the individual their advocates; most importantly the need for an interdisciplinary team to have the necessary tools to provide the right care for this population.
