Personal Reflection on Articles Referring to Oppression, Liberation, Cultural Humility, and Privilege
In our daily lives people deal with oppression, liberation, cultural humility, and privilege. We all deal with these differently and they may mean different things to people. It is important to understand what each means to me but also everyone around me. By reading a couple articles I hope to gain more knowledge about these topics.
White Privilege, Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack
While I was reading the article, I was thinking to myself how divided our world is and how unfairly some people are treated. The world can be a cruel place for some individuals. There are many stereotypes and biases about the different cultural groups and that’s when I think of oppression and privilege. I

There are different views on whether someone was born to be gay or a lesbian. That is what I find interesting, if someone was born that way then why can’t people accept it. On the other hand, people can fall in love with any person based on their personality. I was impacted by this article because I find sexuality so interesting. I have a couple friends who are lesbians and the one told me she knew she was a lesbian growing up because she was always attracted to girls. My other friend didn’t know until she met this girl and just fell in love with her. Some people are fixated on marrying that perfect guy and having a family because that is the normal thing to do. I wish people could grow up not stressing about their sexuality and just be happy. I agreed with this author, he made some good points but I wish he would have included more about gender being a factor in some people’s choices when it comes to

Without even knowing what gender means, they are given sexuality. Stephanie believes there is no choice in this matter. People can't help being gay, she states, "My same-sex attractions were awakened in me at such a young age that they felt as mush a part of me as my limbs" (Fairyington 51). We live in a time where unfortunately, racism is still an issue that many people across many races deal with. In America, it is mainly African-Americans, Hispanics, and Middle Eastern people that deal with the pain and hatred that takes shape in many different forms. In “Understanding White Privilege” by Frances Kendall, Ph.D., the author explores the concept of white privilege with an informative, yet critical tone in order to persuade readers to think differently. Systems of Privilege and Inequality With an over arching theme of oppression, chapter two seeks to explore the different intersections of privilege, or lack thereof, as well at the effects in current society. “Towards a New Vision” by Patricia Hill Collin, “White Privilege and Male Privilege” by Peggy McIntosh, and “There is No Hierarchy of Oppression”, by Audre Lord all sought to end the belief that oppression only happens to one group of people and that oppression should be ranked. Throughout all of the essays one theme ran throughout; everyone experiences some form of oppression and when society begins ranking oppression everyone ends up losing. Patricia Hill Collins’s “Towards a New Vision” was written in 1993 and discusses race, class…

Oppression during modern America is something that is inevitably present throughout the lives of American inhabitants. The United States is not close, whatsoever, to being classified as a virtuous nation. We as a nation oppress not only the poor, but also the weak, the homeless, and strangers, but many people do not realize how frequent it occurs in everyday life. Furthermore, most Americans are unaware to the oppression we cause in other countries, especially to the underprivileged nations with our trade, free enterprise, and wealthy lifestyles. In comparison, I noticed that there was an overall oppression problem throughout every reading, even though they may be different examples of oppression.…

According to Hill Collins, is oppression full of contradictions because each group describes the type of oppression they feel comfortable with as being fundamental and thereby classify other oppression as less important. This approaches fail to recognize that there are only few people who are purely victims or oppressors. Each person has varying amounts of penalties and privileges from different systems of oppression that frames everyone's lives. This makes oppression to be full of contradictions. Social activists fail to understand how their action and thoughts may uphold someone else's subordination.…

In Allan Johnson’s article, “The Trouble We’re In,” he talked about privilege and oppression. Privilege is when one group of people has something of value and another group of people doesn’t have it, simply because it is denied to them. On the flip side, oppression is the social factors that are passed down to people and prevent them from having a good life. One of the social characteristics that I identify for myself is that I am a well-educated student. I have only ever attended private schools, from kindergarten until college.…

In American society today we are taught to see social constructs such as gender, sexuality, race, and class as something that puts people at a disadvantage; in doing this, we often fail to recognize the areas in which we are privileged. It is important to understand that we are all privileged in certain ways. Simply being able-bodied in an ableist society or thin in a fat-shaming society grants members of those groups privilege. In this regard, white privilege is the privilege a person gets by being a white person in a white-dominant society. It does not have to do with any one individual, what they do or who they are, only the fact that they are white.…

Intersectionality is a conceptual tool used primarily for analyzing key differences in various environments and situations. Feminists use this term to critically analyze the patterns of oppression that interlock with multiple identities, such as social inequality in its complex forms. Bromley, in her writing, explains that the societal categories that define one 's identity and status quo further enables the development of hierarchies, and unearned privilege. Identity markers such as gender, sex, class, and race are socially constructed factors that further put up barriers of inclusion and exclusion for the individuals of society. In order to explain the root of the problem or offer a solution to eliminate these constructive barriers, one must…

Oppression, Power and Privilege There are three types and two modalities of oppression. The types include: primary, secondary and tertiary oppression while the modalities include: oppression by force and by deprivation. Oppression can be viewed as harsh, unjust or cruel exercise of power over other people while oppression by force denotes oppression under duress or through coercion another or others (Hays and Erford, 2014). It involves imposing on others an object, label, rule, experience or set of living conditions that is unwanted, needlessly painful and affects one’s physical and psychological well-being, for example, rape and physical abuse of women (Hays and Erford, 2014). Oppression by deprivation involves depriving others of an…
