Education Meeting Reflection

In high school I was very active in student council, Murray County Leadership, and honors and AP classes. I have gone to a few Board of Education meetings before. However, going in with the eyes of a future teacher and educated on issues that are plaguing the American education system, was very thought-provoking. Before, I was very focused on my part of the meetings and what I was to accomplish at the meetings. This time I sat in the audience with the other teachers and parents. I found that I knew several of the faces that came to the meeting. Many were old teachers, adminastrators, or people from my community. Overall, it was a very welcoming and friendly community.

It was a very sociable environment, however, when the meeting began I quickly felt lost and confused. Everything went very swiftly. I could not tell when any decisions were made. I heard only ‘Yay and nay’, and then they moved on. Everything was read robotically and rushed. Honestly, if I was a new parent that had never gone to a meeting before, I would have felt baffled. I left without knowing more information about my community and the education system. I feel like Murray County Board of Education could make the meeting more welcoming for parents or other members of the community. As a future teacher, I heard a few things that I recognized from our class. Issues such as field trips, salary, and purchase orders were brought up. Many policies were passed. As always, I believed money was one of the most important topics at the meeting. In conclusion, I feel as if the meeting was very effective and the board made multiple important decisions for the education system, yet I also feel as if many of the decisions were already made and were not explained thoroughly. I understand that as a future teacher I will want to take part of these meetings so that I can stay educated on decisions that are being made. Going to this meeting was enlightening, and I look forward to experience

I have all of these plans of including my special education teacher in every activity, however, what would I do if the special education teacher did not want to work with “my” students but only wanted to work with “her” students? How would I approach this situation in a respectful and professional manner? This question was not ever brought up in the panel discussion, however, I believe that one of the panel members would have responded in this way: If you have a special education teacher who does not want to help teach the whole class, you make your whole class more welcoming and inviting, letting this co-worker know that you respect their credentials and that you want to help them support their students. They may also have replied by saying that acting like you run the show is only going to make your special education teacher want to retreat, but if you kindly push them to present a mini lesson, or just work with a small group of mixed students, that they will slowly become more comfortable working with you and all of your…

One strategy that I’ve seen used the most is the use of learning stations. I personally think learning stations are very useful. However, I don’t feel they should be the primary strategy for teaching a new skill. While observing and participating in my facilitating teacher’s classroom I’ve had the opportunity to use some technology. I personally never seen the effectiveness of using the ELMO, however, I’ve learned how important and effective it can be just to display the work the students are supposed to do so that all students can see and follow along as the teacher explains.…

Although I did a lot of practices, during the presentation I went through the content quickly and lacked some explanation. This is because every member had to fit all the explanations for their allocated time. Hence, I was pressured and rushed through the presentation. Moreover, I have a weakness in my non-verbal communication skills. I felt like I didn’t make much eye contact with the lecturer.…

Lesson Plan Self-reflection and Evaluation A self-evaluation is a powerful tool that always helped me to strive to become a better teacher. Reflecting on and evaluating my teaching after a lesson was done, gave me insights that saved me lots of trouble and time throughout my teaching career. Even a few brief evaluative notes on a lesson plan helped me immensely the next time I had to teach that lesson. In the rush of teaching, and due to time constraints, I was sometimes tempted to skip self-evaluation. There were always plenty of other pressing things that needed to be done.…

I learned the importance of the school 's administration and just how many interactions they have with classroom teachers. The district did an excellent job with incorporating their higher level staff into the classroom. This took away much of the anxiety that I had towards my future bosses being ranked so much higher than myself. I tutored students in a after school program and they recepted my help thoroughly, this boosted my confidence that this is what I am meant to do with my life. The most entertaining aspect of my sixty hours was volunteering to go on a field trip with my class.…

And learning how to management my time wisely was one of the things that I had to be careful and aware of. The last few days, I have had a conflict between classes because there were assignments in long terms that I had to do each week, and in my other classes, I had to do my critical thinking research project, my math homework and my religion studies’ work. It has been a whole process of dedicating time on each class. I hope to keep doing well in this class. I feel that this is the most important class because it teaches me lessons that I will not acquire in other classes.…
