According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the simple literal definition of leadership is: a position as a leader of a group, organization, etc.; the time when a person holds the position of leader; and/or the power or ability to lead other people. Leadership may also be defined by more profound descriptions by business professionals, politicians, coaches, military leaders, etc. Tom Landry, former coach of the Dallas Cowboys, defined leadership as, “the ability to get people to do what they don’t want to do to achieve what they want to achieve”. Most people have an individual idea of what leadership means to them personally. Model the Way/Leading Performance and Change: IAW reference (a), performance competencies include developing a vision, managing conflict, quality and daily management of projects, appraising performance, problem solving, creativity, innovation, decision making, and customer focus. The lowest score I received during the LPI 360 survey regarded my ability/willingness to ask for feedback on my performance on how my actions affect other people’s performance. This directly relates to the CG leadership performance competencies of customer focus and performance appraisal. After self-reflection this may be attributed to my high demand for success and perfection. Relaxing my search for perfection in others should allow others to feel more at ease when mistakes are made. In addition, I will revamp and begin anew, ways to receive feedback from supervisors, co-workers and subordinates. This may be accomplished through traditional methods such as employee reviews and non-standard avenues such as anonymous …show more content…
The items mentioned above are only a sample of areas for my improvement, but a start and a road map to a goal setting agenda to improve and see results. Effective leadership demands constant evaluation as each situation requires different leadership tactics. Vince Lombardi once stated, “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence”. He also said, “Leaders aren’t born, they are made. And just like anything else, through hard work. And that’s the price we’ll have to pay to achieve that goal, or any other goal”. These words from Coach Lombardi reaffirm the need to constantly work at the craft of leadership. Leadership needs to morph and change to adjust to each situation and each personal interaction, but there are some constants of leader characteristics that must be held in any situation. IAW reference (a), good leadership develops through a never-ending process of self-study, education, training, experience, observation, and emulation. Combining natural or learned leadership traits with continual development of skills while applying those to our Core Values of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty; anyone may achieve success as a leader and create their individual leadership
