Community Service Learning Project Analysis

Being and older student with an established carreer, I was a little unsure on where to conduct my service learning project. In the class syllabus it states that the pupose of the service learning project is: “To connect course materials to policies and practices implemented through agencies to serve victims and survivors of interpersonal and power based violence. It is designed to encourage critical evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of current approaches to serving victims of violence” (Criminal Justice 403. n.d.). After reading the pupose of the assignment, I wanted to find an agency that would benefit my career and the community I work in. I have been a police officer for 18 years, and I love the profession and will retire …show more content…
I am a detective at the Kirkland Police Department and investigate the cases, but I do not have a lot of interaction with the victims of domestic violence and sexual assault after my investigation is completed. Once I finish my investigation and file the case with the prosecutor and or arrest the offender my job is done. Working with the family violence advocate will help me to learn about resources available inside and outside of the Kirkland Police Department such as CPS, child advocacy services and shelters. After I have completed my 20 hours of service with the family violence advocate, I hope to be able to give the victims more guidance to their question of “What happens now?” Along with me telling the victims to call the family violence advocate, I would be able to give them some reassurance of the resources and help available for them. I also see the family violence advocate in need of assistance with sending out letters to victims, follow up phone calls, filing of paperwork and data entry. All of those tasks are centered around working with victims of domestic abuse, child abuse, and sexual …show more content…
The majority of the population are white with a median age of 37.4 years old. 51 percent of the population are women (Community Facts, n.d.). The Kirkland Police Department family violence advocate serves all of the people in the City that are victims of domestic violence and or sexual assault. The advocate provides victim assistance, intervention, counseling and coordinates support for family/youth issues such as domestic violence and missing/runaway juveniles.
The biggest challenge I see serving with the family violence advocate is avoiding the need to overstep my boundaries by wanting to help out more by arresting the perpetrators. This challenge may also be an advantage because after my volunteer work I could put on my detective hat and then arrest the offender. This was discussed both with the volunteer coordinator and the family violence advocate. There were no concerns, and they both felt it was a win-win situation for me to volunteer with the family violence advocate.
Working for this agency will be a relatively easy task because I already work there. It will also be very rewarding and beneficial for me to learn about the resources for the victims in the community I work for and also to understand what happens after I have completed my

SALP: Domestic Abuse Program Evaluation Christopher M. Nima San Jose State University Social workers have long confronted the multiple issues that coexist within a household filled with domestic violence. The problems that can fester in a household filled with domestic violence range from child endangerment to alcohol abuse. Unfortunately, services for the victims of these types of family violence have been splintered, forcing single women or families to go to multiple agencies for support. This issue can become ever more complicated when the victims come from immigrant households who are less familiar with American culture, laws, and services available to them. The focus of the program evaluation is to propose human…

The priorities that should be pursued is that if a case is suspected to be one of domestic violence, that it should be considered a serious offense and not just assault. This would include making harsher laws to help deter the violent behavior. The actions that social workers should take is to advocate to Congress that domestic violence is a serious issue and that the definition should expand to things that occur under domestic violence such as stalking and sexual assault. Lastly, what social workers need to continue to do is ask for harsher laws to deter violent behavior and advocate that programs reach out to younger youth so that they can stop and call out any type of violence enacted in…

Although Intimate partner violence has been around for the longest time ever, it has recently been recognized as a social issue (Alvarez & Bachman, 2014, p. 110). The main issue with the Criminal Justice System and Intimate partner violence relies on the fact that the issue was always viewed as a private matter until lately (Alvarez & Bachman, 2014, p. 110), which may be the reason for so many flaws in the Criminal Justice System when it comes to Intimate partner violence. Police can improve their response by treating the situation as a serious criminal matter. Sometimes officers do not think the situation is a bad as it is, which often result in life threatening situations. Police Departments should also offer training on intimate partner abuse for officers so they will be able to identify red flags, and also know how to properly deal with a situation pertaining to intimate partner abuse.…

Domestic Violence is a rising problem in America and is a major problem, but people don’t see that the children are effected from the crime itself. “Research suggests that between 3.3 million and 10 million children in the United States are exposed to domes- tic violence each year. And more than a decade of empirical studies indi-cates that this exposure can have significant negative effects on children 's behavioral, emotional, social, and cognitive development” (Carter, L., Weithorn, L., & Behrman, R. ,1999, pg.4). Introduction Domestic violence is regarded as a serious offense for women, their families and society. Over the past three decades, the criminal justice system as well as social intervention responses to women victimized by domestic violence has evolved a great deal. Historically, domestic violence affairs have been viewed as a normal part of intimate relationships. In the 1970’s domestic violence began to be known as a crime requiring intervention by the criminal justice system. Although women make up 85% of the victims, this crime is non-biased and non- gender specific and knows no race, religion or social standing. While great strides have been made in enacting stricter laws to prosecute the perpetrators, work still needs to be done and funding provided to help protect the victim and punish, or rehabilitate the perpetrators. Society needs to fight attitudes of complacency and acceptance of abuse and encourage proper support systems, which can make sure the victims of domestic violence along with their children lead fulfilled lives having little or no fear of retribution or retaliation from their…
