Passionate Teacher Reflection

My experience at Wedgewood was more impactful than I could have ever imagined. The teacher that I shadowed was none other than the astounding, Debbie Alt. Ms. Alt showed me what it truly means to care about students. She reminded me so much of the effective educators in the Robert L. Fried’s book, “Passionate Teacher”.
For my content instruction I focused on the high-leverage practice number ten :Engaging in strategic relationship-building conversations with students. I worked closely with six particular students who struggled with reading and were put into a certain group to improve their reading skills. Not only did I learn about the students struggles with their reading, but most importantly, I learned about their personalities. Each one

My goal during the O&P process was unlike my fellow classmates in the Ed- Foundations block. I truly felt a responsibility to make real, personal connections with the students I encountered. Instead of just focusing on my teaching abilities, I wanted enhance my skills at making relationships with my students. Just as the high leverage practice states, it is important that teachers make meaningful connections with every student and, in return, those students will respect their teacher and appreciate lessons. All too often, teachers are more focused at the task at hand, regarding testing, homework, and grades rather than focusing the true uniqueness that each student has to offer. I incorporated art with my lesson because it truly kept the students engaged and then they were able to share their artistic abilities with their fellow classmates and how they view idioms. The students started off really strong with their attention level. Unfortunately, as the lesson went on their focus drifted. My teacher and I discussed after the lesson that the lack of focus was probably because they felt “too” comfortable with me. I had yet to put my foot down and demand respect from the beginning because I was unsure that it was my place, since I was a guest in Ms. Alt’s classroom. To try and reconnect the engagement, I thought it was important to point out the individuals who were doing the right thing to hopefully set an example for the other students who were choosing to be disrespectful. One thing I learned very quickly is that no lesson is more important than the teaching of respect. That is one aspect of Ms. Alt that I admired so much. She was not afraid to take a step back from the lesson and focus on how the interactions between the students was not respectful. Fried explains this importance of teaching respect by stating, “Maybe we should view discipline as an opportunity for us to teach values of respect, of democratic society, of good-naturedness, fairness, and decency toward one another, as well as a measure of

This portfolio is a representation of the observations completed for the class M464 – Methods of Teaching Reading taught by Dr. Hope Smith Davis. These observations have been conducted and recorded by Joshua Lindsey, a teacher candidate at Indiana University South Bend during the spring semester of 2017. These observations give prospective teachers a chance to be immersed in a content-area classroom and to witness day-to-day operations within the secondary classroom as they occur. Last year, I sat in on my aunt’s third grade class at Washington Irving, an elementary school in my district that I attended for three years. After visiting the classroom a handful of times, I absolutely fell in love.…

The role of the student in the RTI change initiative was very limited. The pupils selected for intervention could not choose whether or not to take these classes. Though test scores were consulted, students, themselves, were not consulted during the planning or implementation of the initiative. Students were merely “potential beneficiaries of change” (Fullan, 2006, p. 170). As beneficiaries, these learners were only to be engaged as recipients of the remediation services being offered to them.…

Classroom management is crucial for every teacher to have in a successful learning environment. I believe that students need to be controlled and disciplined; students at this age need to be guided in the right path. I believe that students are basically good but that the environment around them influences them tremendously. If they maintain busy with instruction then they will not have time to be disruptive and they need to be guided to behave appropriately.…
