My Personal Reflection As A Social Work

Introduction
It is important for me, as a Social Worker to implement the best practice I can achieve for my clients. Social Workers may increase in empathy as we walk a mile through our client’s experiences. As I am coming close to graduating and joining this profession, some questions I struggle with come from my own personal experiences and insecurities such as; will I be able to compartmentalize my own counter-transferences, what are my fears, will I be good enough, will they like me, what motivates me to do this, can I really do this and what will I do about it? Since I want to understand my clients struggles, I want to effectively be able to understand their mindset as much as to understand their thinking process. While some clients’ mental state may be predictable and/or easy to understand, for

In Alpha’s case, she is not yet willing to agree to her diagnosis. Prior to my exposure to Alpha, she was admitted into a facility for four month to help treat her eating disorder. It was during this period that the doctors diagnosed her with schizophrenia and put her on medication. Last year, after leaving the facility – and a brief cannabis “drug rage” – she had her father pay $5,000 for her and her mother to fly to Peru to do an herbal cleansing in order to rid herself of the medication they had her on in the

    b. Personally, I think the way social workers providing services should depend on the types of clients we are working with. Working with children is different with working with elderly. Even though both groups demand special care, elderly do not like to be treated as children. Before I started my field placemen at the ELC, I believe that in order to work with children, one should be patient and really love kids. The working experience proved my views were correct.…

Early upon entering the College of Social Work I became interested in the homeless population. In my junior year, I took the time to volunteer with the Renaissance Community Center, an organization that provides various services to Homeless individuals in Tallahassee. Volunteering here taught me about people and the effects of interpersonal communication, how the availability of services can aid people during personal crisis, and the limitations of resources and access on a vulnerable population such as the homeless. This experience is valuable to me as it increased my interest in the population and my awareness of how it intersects with values and the purpose of social work.…

This class has been a great experience for me and the most important thing that I learned in class came from the young adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood interviews. Linking the interviews with the person I interviewed with the theories related to that age had help me become aware of how I will use these theories in practicing social work in all areas. Now that I am aware of the theories I seek out the person I am working with the past history of their life from childhood to now. Each human experience is different and important to know when working with an individual. For example, in the middle adulthood interview, Shawn had a good relationship with his children that were very important to him.…

This leads to another aspect of my professional practice, which is engagement. Even though I may not have a lot of experiences working as a social worker, I can use that to my advantage where I can come in with an open mind to new ideas and even more positive outlook. I find that sometimes social workers or any other helping professionals who have been in the field for a long time tend to stick to the same practices and mindset that can negatively impact clients. For me, I would engage with my clients in open discussions regarding topics like what they are going through, what they like to change, future goals and so forth. By doing this, it helps motivate them to take action in their own life and have a final say without having to rely on a…

One task that I am able to perform for my agency independently is conducting guardianship reviews at the client’s home. This consists of setting up an appointment with the client to meet them at their home with the child/children present. When I make to face to face contact with the client I have to ask a list of questions that DHHS provides as well as another questions…

As I have learned throughout my time as a social work student at Carleton University, I have become familiar with the generalist perspective of social work practice. My understanding of the general perspective stipulates, that it is better for a social worker to have a strong understanding of multiple theories and ways of practice, rather than being proficient in solely one theory or practice. This is directly related to the changes that have occurred at my placement, I have luckily been able to learn from two supervisors. Therefore, I was able to develop 2 distinct practices, which were influenced by my first supervisor Hadiya, and my second supervisor Caitlin. Both of the practices that I have learned were developed by watching how both of my supervisors respond to different experiences, as well as their interaction patterns with the residents of Harmony House.…
