I need to engage with marginalized communities more. I have been extremely busy throughout my four years at Laurier, between school and work I often do no find much time for other activities. However, I recognize this needs to change as I more forward in my career to becoming a paralegal. I want to be able to apply my knowledge but also my experience with these groups of people. Being able to understand your clients on a personal level is an important feat. Unfortunately I have not been able to do so. In the near future I would like to begin volunteering at “The Bridges” the homeless shelter located in my hometown Cambridge Ontario. There I will encounter numerous people who can open my eyes to some of the disparities happening in society today. It is safe to hide in a bubble and believe all is alright in the world. Although, if you are entering a field that deals with all different kinds of people it is better to be able to understand where they are coming from. I also need to become less judgmental of certain groups. It is easy to watch the news every night and create thoughts and feelings against people who you do not even know. I acknowledge that I do this and it is something that I want to work on so that I can stop the discrimination of people in our society.
