Before I joined this course my main focus was video editing. To begin with, I learnt the basics of Photography, i.e the rule of thirds and focusing. I then started to take photos in my spare time to practice using those methods. We got given our assignment the following week, I started to think up ideas for my project. I originally looked at photographing cars after a finding a few photographers I like. In terms of class work we looked at more background knowledge of photography as well as looking at darkroom work. After more development of my understanding we shot a 3-minute film, so we could test our filming and editing skills. In this time I decided I wanted to have my theme as the movement. This meant I could do we range of photos and videos, including my original ideas of taking photos of cars.

I was originally going to film this outside but due to the cold weather, I decided to take it inside. This meant I could have more control over the situation, as I placed the ice into my bath meaning I could pour hot water around the ice to quicken up the process. This meant that you could see movement in 3 forms to finish the video off. One was, of course, the ice melting, the second was the water around the edges and finally, the steam from the hot water across the ice caused an extra visual touch. This completed the video with a nice fade out.
The final touch to the video was the soundtrack. As a musician, music always is the deciding factor in a lot of scenes for me. I had originally planned to use music from my band as I thought it would link well. However, I began to realise the music didn't flow with the visuals. Luckily my Dad is also a musician who has been working on a slow, dreamy instrumental song using guitars and synths. I tried applying this to the video and it fell hand in hand. It adding an extra dimension to the movement, flow and feel of my

With this project I didn’t feel particularly inspired at this beginning. Forcing myself to just keep shooting, for hours and hours, the same subjects, really pushed me to start directing my camera at scenes and lighting conditions I wouldn’t have thought to shoot before. I think a lot can be learned from when you think you've seen an object, person or place in every way you possibly can and then somehow keep making new photos of it. Really compelling and refreshing work can come out of boredom. When I found myself getting uninterested or feeling like a subject was getting repetitive those were the times where I found myself actually being genuinely, and novelly, creative.…

Joining the New Visions program was one of the wisest decisions I have made. When nurses that I shadow at Unity Hospital express how jealous they are that they didn’t have a program like this when they were in high school, it reminds me to take advantage of this opportunity that not every student receives. I am confident that when I graduate college, I will be able to recollect this program, and how it led me to be successful. I will reminisce about the long hours dedicated to each college-level assignment in determination to receive a grade in the high 90’s, or that moment when I witnessed a five pound baby be born from a cesarean delivery, or even when I stood next to the operating table observing a total knee replacement surgery, while the surgeon and nurses took the time to teach me about what they were doing--an opportunity that not even college nursing students were able to see. Every assignment I completed, conversation I had, and person I met, has transformed me into a more educated and open minded student.…

Jed opened the front door of the 12Bar and gazed outside. Dark brown river water quietly and urgently filled the streets around the bar, tuning it into its own private island. The view reminded him of the “big flood” from eight years ago. That flood had devastated most of the area, but somehow had left the 12Bar intact. When Jed purchased the bar six months ago, the former owners assured him saying, “…that was a five-hundred year flood, it will never happen again in your lifetime.”…

The first several years of my work, I worked with the literacy project to help Negros in the South pass the literacy tests. The tests were used by whites to limit the amount of voters who were of color. The literacy project was located in Alabama and Mississippi. I like when the viewer look at the images and then deside what is the series or the work about. Moving on the technical side, I will be using my Canon 6D with my 24-105mm lens and possibly a 70-200mm lens because I want to get close up shot on candels, faces, flages, scarfes, etc. I will be using ambient light so I have to go between 3200 and 6400 ISO.…
