Vocation is love and happiness towards the path that will make me the most fulfilled in life but also living a life to serve God. For through him we receive our callings. I thought that was beautiful, considering a man like Ivan successful who was once happy and lost his way. Gerasim is displayed as white teen of a healthy peasant and like a man in the thick of urgent worked, he briskly opened the front door, called the coachman, helped Peter Ivanovich into the sledge, and sprang back to the porch as if in readiness for what he had to do next. One of the passages that stood out to me was the servant Gerasim's compassion. While everyone made Ivan feel little, like wasted space, Gerasim showed him support and comfort. "Gerasim did it all easily, willingly, simple and with a good nature that touched Ivan Ilych. I feel that’s a great example of vocation. It takes lots of effort and patience to work for such a man like Ivan and absorb such criticism from a man like that. But he builds a connection with Ivan, after working for him for so long and feeling a kind of union would have created a magical and fulfilling experience for

One day, as Gerasim is leaving the room he explains that “he did not find his work a burden because he was doing it for a dying man and that he hoped that someone would do the same for him when his time came,” (Tolstoy, 104). Gerasim cares for Ivan not only because he is goodness personified, but because he hopes for some kind of retribution when he is dying. In combination with Gerasim’s clean and healthy appearance, Tolstoy thus expands his guidelines for leading an honest life to include an acceptable level of self-preservation. Tolstoy does not use Gerasim to portray a stereotypical impoverished peasant who gives his entire life to others at the expense of his own self.…

For as long as I can remember, every teacher I have ever had made us share with the class what we wanted to be when we grew up. As a group, we would sit in a large circle and take turns sharing how we wanted to spend our adult lives. Some would be squirming in their chair, anxiously awaiting their turn to blurt out their lifetime goal. I, however, would be intensely listening to everyone else 's answers. Eventually, I would hear one that I could piggyback on and agree for the moment that I might want to do that too.…
