The book defines recovery as a process of growth over time, with no punctuated final outcome. Both process and outcome are important to recovery. A process can be seen as journey and outcomes as the benefit. However addict should keep in mind recovery is a day to day process and to achieve this lasting recovery, addicts must put more effect in recovery.…
The Recovery Model: I can see how the recovery model would work with Solution Focused Brief Therapy. “The recovery model aims to help people with mental health problems to look beyond mere survival and existence. It encourages them to move forward, set new goals and do things and develop relationships that give their lives meaning”. ("Mental Health foundation," SFBT is an approach that focuses on how clients change, rather than one which focuses on diagnosing and treating problems. For Tonya, she is recovering from a substance addiction, child and adult abuse, AIDS, and has addiction to sex, and mental health problems.…
To all the doctors, teachers, peers, and family members who didn’t believe I would amount to greatness, thank you. When I was young, I didn’t understand why school seemed more challenging for me than it did for everyone else. I couldn’t discern why I was unable to distinguish my right from my left no matter how many times my teacher sighed and told me it was simple or why I could complete math problems perfectly then copy my answer wrong between the work area and the answer line.…

Mike has many staff that in PSR program that are Latino, specifically Mexican American, that are part of his mental health team. Still, his psychiatrist and other staff are of a different culture which can lead to further acculturative stress if they lack cultural understanding (Adames-Chaves-Dueñas, 2016). Curiosity got the better of me so I researched the origin of the 12-Step Program. The story was interesting and enlightening. If you do not know the story, I highly recommend you take 10 minutes to indulge. Fascinating! Not only do the 12-steps apply to the recovering client, but to all people everywhere.…

1. Where am I in relation to the learning goal(s) I established for myself for this course? Based on our research, recovery oriented services are enhanced, not limited, by evidence based practices. There is great evidence that individuals with severe mental illness can recover, and create satisfying, meaningful lives (Gill & Pratt, 2005). Evidence based practices are “practical approaches aimed at helping consumers to achieve meaningful goals” or experience recovery (Gill & Pratt, 2005). According to one source, “research strongly supports …the use of psychosocial interventions such as supported employment, various approaches to illness self-management, family psychoeducation, case management based on the principles of assertive community treatment, and substance abuse treatment that is integrated with mental health treatment”…
One such advantage is that it addresses the client’s goals, and seeks to assist him or her reach the place in their life they want to be, to construct their life the way that they want it. It involves aspects that are shared by all people, fostering a sense of inclusion. The recovery model recognizes that the individual’s experiences make them the experts, it is built on potential, choice, positive expectations, the instilling of hope, and confidence in a client’s strengths. Too, the recovery model supports a strong peer culture, improving social integration (NAMI, 2015). Recovery in this context, means access to a full-scale program that includes resources such as exercise, education, relationship forming, therapy, life skills enhancement, support groups, and self-help groups, to name a few (B. Padgett, 2007, as cited by Ham,…
I believe that deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill was a serious mistake. In order to draw this conclusion, I had to first understand what deinstitutionalization was and why we came to this decision as a country. In 1955 the number of patients in mental hospitals peaked to a striking 560,000 patients only a year after Thorazine, an antipsychotic drug was approved by the Food and Drug administration. Not even 10 years later, John F. Kennedy signed the Community Mental Health act to enact federal funding for the building of community-based preventative care and treatment facilities. Although, the act was signed the funding was never truly provided due to the Vietnam War and economic problems.…
The recovery is an intervention that “refers to the extent to which a person with mental health problems, regains or attains a meaningful life with or without their symptoms (Pilgrim, 2009)”. The recovery model gained momentum in the 1980’s when the UK pushed for the change from institutional care towards community care. Recovery model acts to recognize and enable the development of people’s potential, skills and assets. It also uses them as experts on experience rather than being passive users of mental health services. Some examples of how recovery has been used for was those who have been experiencing voices, to take control of the voices rather than to eradicate them (Coleman 1999; Romme and Escher, 1993 cited in Coppock & Dunn 2010).…
