“Geraldine pressed her face to the glass, peering out. She saw the paramedics pushing a gurney toward the front door of her house…..Then the paramedics wheeled the gurney back out, carrying someone covered by a sheet” (Story) The illustration of the gurney being wheeled out of the house and the emotional uncertainty Geraldine experienced is an traumatic imagery that would evoked emotions within myself if working with this case. If I was the social worker working with this case, I would first need to deal with my reactions to the gruesome event. It is important to reflect upon my feelings to ensure I provide the best supportive, unbiased, and realistic care for Geraldine.
My initial reaction to this devastating case was sadness. It is heartbreaking to know that a life, a mother, a sister, a daughter was taken away from her family by a man she loved. The issues of domestic violence became another initial emotion after reading the case. I began to question the family and friends who were of a support system for Tanya. In addition, Geraldine’s teacher was not made aware of the tragedy and her past history of good behavior and strong grades at her former school. I question why this valuable information was not shared to the teacher and why support systems were not put in place to assist in the wellbeing of this young girl. In a personal reflection of inner city schools, it is common for the students to have behavioral issues.
