Nursing is a constantly changing part of the healthcare system that encompasses the individual in a holistic manner. In order to care for a patient, we must understand their emotional, cognitive, physical, spiritual, cultural and environmental aspects. In order to understand how these concepts are interrelated we have to step back and understand how Florence Nightingale understood these concepts. According to Florence, “Nurses put the patient in the best condition for nature to act upon him” (Nightingale, 1969). This means that people have an innate ability to grow and self-heal while nurses nurture and support the natural factors that affect healing and development. According to the ANA, “Nursing is the protection, promotion and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities and populations” (ANA, 2004, p.7). When analyzing this quote, we can see that nursing does not focus on the problem; it includes the patient’s perspective, critical thinking, lifelong learning and the promotion of social justice.
