Personal Philosophy Of Becoming A Nurse

Improved Essays
What inspired the decision for me to become a nurse? One reason that I elected to pursue a career in nursing is the fact that not only is it the nurse’s duty to promote and insure health and safety, but it is also the nurse’s responsibility to protect the human rights of the patient. The nurse promotes, advocates for, and protects the rights, health, and safety of the patient (ANA, 2011). This is the third decree in the American Nurses Association’s code of ethics and it relates to my personal philosophy of nursing, to protect, promote, empathize and advocate for all vulnerable people especially those under my direct care. The patient has the right to refuse certain types of procedures or treatment due to religion, clashes of their culture

Personal Nursing Philosophy Becoming a Register nurse is the route that I have chosen. During my childhood years I remember my mother stating her desire for becoming one; after that, I found the career of nursing interesting. I always asked myself. “What is a nurse?” Nurses are not only trained to care for the sick; instead, an educated person who performs ongoing assessments to ensure that the patients’ needs are met.…

“Nurse Kaylee.” The raspy voice of my grandfather calling me that, jump started my career choice of becoming a Registered Nurse. My personal nursing philosophical statement is “caring for culturally diverse patients and their families with respect and dignity, being different or doing certain things differently does not make an individual less than a human” many years of nursing experience and working with patients and families of different cultures lead to the creation of this statement. I have observed some nurses and other healthcare professionals being insensitive toward diverse patients and their families, they used words like “this is the United States we do not do things like that.” Many people in the healthcare profession fail to realize that the United States population is becoming more culturally diverse, rapidly; and the lack of patients’ cultural knowledge…

It was my mother’s ruptured appendix that caused my interest in nursing. When me and my family would go visit her at the hospital I saw how the nurses were caring for her compassionately. Their gentle approach, positive attitude, and way of providing information regarding her treatment, we all felt at ease knowing my mother had great nurses. Witnessing the way those nurses attended my mother triggered my desire to one day become just as them. through them I realized how much I would enjoy having the ability to care for others especially my family.…

The decision to become a Registered Nurse was brought on by my past experiences which made me appreciate the field and merits of nursing. As a new nurse, I gave little thought to the physiology behind wounds themselves, often finding myself just carrying out care orders and trying to prevent complication. It was 8 years ago when I became a home care nurse and had some real life exposure to the effects of wounds/ostomy’s on a patient's overall health and self-conception. My goals after becoming WOC is first to broaden my knowledge in the use of advanced therapies and technology, then apply this knowledge to achieve better outcomes for the patients we serve in the community. Second being WOC with a greater knowledge base, will allow me to…

This is a question that I have been asked many times in my life. I have thought about my answer on numerous different occasions and over the years my reasoning has never changed. I am 20 years old, and the story of me arriving into this world is memorable and a part of why I have chosen to become a nurse. My mother went into labor at 26 week and they told her to be prepared, as the likelihood of me surviving being born that early was not good. I, however, held on for eight more weeks and was born at 34 weeks.…

Before defining my personal nursing philosophy I decided to invest time on research, I looked for meanings, definitions, theories, and samples. I found out that Philosophy, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary (1997), it is a “critical study of fundamental beliefs and the grounds for them, a basic theory concerning a particular subject, the sum of the ideas and convictions of an individual or group” (page. 552). I also looked for the definition of personal, which according to the same dictionary, it is “and adjective that refers of relating to or affecting a person” ("The merriam-webster dictionary," 1997, page. 548).While completing my research I correspondingly seek for the meaning “Nursing” has for the regular person, for the healthcare provider and even for other nurses. After completing all of that I dedicated my efforts to the terms advanced practice nursing.…

There are many different approaches in developing a relationship with patients, one of which being holistic, patient-centered care. Holistic care is described as “all nursing practice that has healing the whole person as its goal” (American Holistic Nurses’ Association, 1998, Description of Holistic Nursing). A holistic approach allows the nurse to view the patient as a whole, as opposed to focusing in on one small aspect. By viewing the entire person, we are able to provide spiritual, medical, and any other type of care that may be necessary in aiding the recovery of our patients. “Holism involves studying and understanding the interrelationships of the bio-psycho-social-spiritual dimensions of the person, recognizing that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts,” (Dossey, 2010, p.14), which further emphasizes that by using a holistic nursing approach, we are able to take not only a patient’s physical well-being into consideration, but also the emotional, spiritual, and mental well-being of our…

Nursing Personal Goals and Values There are many professions in this world. As a child we always say we want to be doctors, firefighters, or even ballerinas. Many people still do not know what they want to do until their sophomore year in college or even later than that.…
