I am doing my volunteer hours at an organization called Red River Human Services Foundation. This foundation is focused on helping people with disabilities. I am working alongside a caseworker, or a social worker. They provide support to people with developmental disabilities. Creating goals, making a plan according to their client’s needs, and maintaining financial abilities is just some of the things that a caseworker does in their day. I am working alongside with two social workers. My supervisor’s name is Jana Sundbolm, and she has been in the program for 26 years. I also met with another social worker to fully understand what they do in an everyday routine. Lastly, I recently went to the annual Halloween dance to supervise.
Personal Observation As I have been getting further along in my volunteer work, I have gained an insight for people with disabilities. Before my volunteering experience, I had no interest in furthering my experience with people who have a disability. In high school, I remember there were organizations put together for students to help out certain kids. I was one of the students who felt that it was not necessary for me, and I had no interest in doing so. I regret this decision today because with the hours I have spent with these people have been some of the most rewarding hours I have felt. I am always excited to go in and spend time with them because they are very smart people. Growing up I was always known as the shy kid who does not talk or associate with other people. To this day, I am still working on that, and I can say that doing my volunteer hours with people who have a disability has made me realize there is no reason to be shy. Using supervision and consultation to guide professional judgment and behavior. As I was standing in the corner watching everyone it brought back memories to my high school dances. Many of the people there for very aware on how they had to act. There were some though, that had to be reminded to keep things age appropriate, since there were all age groups present. Before the dance started, Phyllis reminded me that this might happen because they are older and are able to make their own decisions away from the dance. These people are the most energetic, fun group I have seen. Lastly, I got to judge the scream contest. This is where the people signed up to go on stage and show everyone there best scary laugh. The crowd voted for this by chanting to each person and whoever got the loudest chant won. This also was fun to see everyone come together no matter who won, or did not win. Overall, this night completely opened my eyes to myself. I realized I worry way too much about what other people think of me. I can say that most of the society is this way, when it should not be. Since the first reflection paper, I have not encountered any more difficulties. I
