According to the Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice, a professional nurse must uphold a value-based behavior. When these values are demonstrated, they assist in the development of a therapeutic relationship between nurse and patient, leading to high quality patient care. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) outlines the values that epitomize the caring, professional nurse. The following values outlined are: altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice. Each patient may have special considerations or beliefs that make their care different from what a nurse may think is typical. Being sensitive and understanding of a patient’s wishes increases the quality of care. Due to my experiences associated with having a family member with a chronic disease, I know how the family structure may be affected. My family has never discussed the implications and feelings related to his chronic disease has on our family. As a child, I would have loved expressing my feelings to someone because I felt I could not discuss it with my parents.
