In the nursing field, there are different philosophies in how a nurse cares for their patients. Throughout the years since nursing inception, there have been many different philosophies that have contributed to the nursing practice today. For instance, Florence Nightingale was one of the first persons to address the philosophy, “What is Nursing?” She explained the difference between nursing and medicine (Black, 2007, p.331).
As a nurse, the development of your own philosophy can model those previous in the field. However, there has always been a stigma about men being nurses. The field was dominated by women and men were of the few. That is why I turn in a different direction. I decided to become a paramedic because it was my best option. Though I enjoy being a paramedic I understood that my career ladder was limited. That is when I decided to pursue the career in nursing. This was years after my personal stigma of men in nursing had evolved. It became apparent that more men were in this field then I had imagined. I saw this as I delivered patients to the Emergency Room. Therefore, my perspective was changed and that is when I decided to become a nurse.
Having the understanding that my opportunities were great in the nursing field, I knew it would allow me to expand my practice helping those in need. I felt nursing was the right career choice. That is why I enrolled in a transition program that allowed paramedics to become nurses. My compassion for those who were sick was the motivation to achieve my goal in becoming a registered nurse.

Hence, having goals provides a person with a sense of life direction. The goals I have set has been broken down into 2, 5, and 10-year increments. Acquiring, goals allow people to lay a roadmap in the direction they would desire to live. At this moment, I find myself maintain my career in the ER. Over the next 2 years, I plan to build up my experience and education which may allow me to become a charge nurse. I would like to consider myself to be that role model and leader many strive to be.
So, continuing this path to my destination, by the 5th year I hope to reach my goal of being cross-trained as an Intensive Care Unit nurse. Working in the ICU would give me a different perspective of how to care for long-term critical patients. However, this would improve my ability as a clinician and increase my self-actualization.
Looking deep into the future as a 10-year nurse, I hope to be a nurse practitioner. Around this time, I should have become well versed in the field, therefore, it will allow me to put all the years of knowledge into practice. Though this appears to be in the distant future taking the right steps will go a long way.
