Frederick Douglass, Malcolm X, and David Raymond, the authors of “Learning to Read,” “Learning to Read,” and “On Being 17, Bright, and Unable to Read,” respectively, shared the same passion for learning how to read and write. Each author knew that being literate was important, but it was important for their own individual reason. For instance, Douglass learned how to read and write in hopes of being free. Malcolm X learned to read and write when Bimbi flaunted his knowledge.…

The first memory most people have of learning to read is a lighthearted and comforting memory. Most of us might not even remember the exact time, or what we read when we first learned to read. However, as most of us will be unable to relate to the following two authors, who both had hardship and serious internal struggles while trying to master what most would consider a necessity to function in society. When writing, I struggle with many things. One of my hardest struggles is grammar and meeting word minium requirements. When writing I get distracted by trying to keep up with the word count, and lose focus on everything else that is just as important than the amount of words that I am required to have. Throughout my years of writing, I was taught to, first write everything down that comes to mind while our juices are flowing. After, I use this technic, then shortly after I run out of thoughts and my paper turns into crap.…

My writing isn’t nearly as advanced as I would like it to be, and this is mostly because I don’t write on my free time. I only ever sit down to write when I need to for an assignment or if it is something for work, however, I do occasionally make journal entries, but it is very rare. Even though I don’t write very often, when I do, it isn’t that hard. I ranked myself a six on challenged to gifted writer because I don’t find writing a challenge, but I am not that great at it either. On the other scales I put myself down as a five.…

When asked to write about and describe myself I often have to stop and ask myself how would someone who knows me, describe me to someone who doesn’t know me at all. I feel unique would probably be the most fitting adjective for describing Robert Yamane. I enjoy being challenged and never walk away from a problem that I know I can solve. Puzzles are great examples, but more importantly I want to be challenged in the classroom. Which is a huge reason why I want to attend Punahou.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…
