The Shadow Soulmates

Tessa Young never really enjoyed parties. She always thought they were boring and gross. The sweaty teenage bodies and the wasted guys that would say inappropriate things have never really been appealing to her, but she came anyway tonight to her best friends halloween party. She only came because it was her best friend who asked, and she could tell people we’re beginning to think she would never be happy again after what happened last summer. So she got herself some water, that she made sure was clean, and stood in the kitchen watching the people that have gone to school with her all her life act like complete idiots. She knew she was going to leave soon. She wondered as she watched them why they would always be

She quietly gasped when she thought she saw those familiar jade green eyes. Finally she got the courage to turn around, and became even more frightened when all she saw was the slight orange glow of the street lights and felt the slightly chilling breeze of the San Francisco air. She began to calm down and kept walking towards home.
Tessa always loved the taste of the air in San Francisco. It always made her feel safe and warm. It was a cool mist of the salt free Pacific water that seeps into your mouth and dampens your tongue. Tessa walked a little longer before those strange feelings started to creep onto her again. She began to shiver and the hairs on the back of her neck, and her arms and legs stood up on end. She flicked her head up and finally saw his eyes. Suddenly she couldn’t even think about how this boy was not alive. All she could do was look at him the way she used too. As he looked at her, eyes boring into her soul, he spoke softly, “Baby I loved you too, and I still do. Come be with me. I need you.” Tessa looked at him and thought about what he had said, but quickly came to her senses. “Harry I can’t do that. You are dead and I am alive,” she answered him in a hesitant voice. Then he disappeared from behind her. She looked around, but saw nothing. The light was slowly creeping back into the alley from the street, but right before she could see again one last whisper came through the abyss, “Come be with me Tessa.” Then it was gone and she was alone in the alley. She ran out as fast as she could feeling the weight of the terror coming back onto her. Tessa did not stop running until she got to her house that was on the top of one of the steep slopes in San Francisco. She shut the door behind and sank to the floor catching her breath. Her parents weren’t home. She knew they wouldn’t be. They were out partying and getting drunk with their rich

My mother tells me that dreams are crossroads, not belonging to the mortal or spirit world. In dreams, the deceased can communicate with the living, tie up loose ends. The lost souls would be able to apologize for anything done wrong, be able to say “I love you” one last time, and even tell them where a certain large stack of money is hidden. The possibilities are infinite in Crossroad. Once anything that made the spirit feel fragmented arose, they were condemned to wander Crossroad in search of closure.…
