Then out of nowhere my dad said we were moving to the USA to meet my mom’s side of the family (that i would see rarely but knew them well) and live there for good. I was happy and sad because i had family here i had a lot of friends and about to go to first grade but at the same time i was going to go and live in the land of freedom.
We had gotten off the plane in New Jersey and i was excited to meet my family. Once we had gotten to our big apartment that my grandma and aunt had we met a lot of family and a lot of people who were friends with our aunt and grandma, of course they were all Egyptians just like us. It was tough but there were two people, a brother and sister named Danny and Susan. They were Egyptians just like me that knew Arabic and English, they had helped me with all my school work until i was put into an ESL class. This class helped me read and write it, although it was a 3 year process i did not give up and during first, second, and third grade class i was learning English and kept making A’s and B’s in my classes that to the siblings help and my ESL teacher, Mrs. Cocoa. Eventually by fifth grade i was really good at English and so were my parents and

For the first two years of my life I lived in Lima, Peru and even though I never culturally adapted myself into the culture I would often visit for months and immerse myself into the culture. Long ago I gave up the search for a true “home” on this planet. My parents were missionaries, so naturally I went wherever they went. I was 12 years old when we returned to the states from Chad, Africa.…

I sat there in the hard seat of my desk and waited patiently. The scent of Lysol was overwhelmingly powerful in the room, but I knew by the third week it would be overpowered by the smell of musty children and chalk dust. I could not wait for my new teacher to saunter up to me, eyes full of admiration, and give me my paper. I had worked hard on it for nearly two months during the summer prior to this new school year. Looking around the room at my new classmates, it was easy to tell who had done the summer assignments, especially with their conspicuous faces.…
