All the blood my heart was pumping it was going directly my ears and during that moment, I did not know what to expect and all I could think was about how to make it through this day. I never asked for any of this. I left friends and my family behind to start a new life, an opportunity for education that I did not have in my hometown of Bani in the Dominican Republic. I was still in shock, preparing myself mentally while my sister put her coat on before getting on the bus. When we arrived in William H. Ohrenberger Elementary, we were introduced to the principal and my first thought was: “Oh my god, my nightmare will start at this moment”.…

One of your escorts drove you to the school you were assigned in a black limo, and you marveled at the scenery. Your eyes darted across every surface, amazed by each detail. Beacon Hills High School was a red-brick building, you saw people your age moving about frantically, huddled into groups, shouting across large areas of concrete. You saw people with colored hair, dark clothes, metal piercing their skin. You were so busy gazing at the sight before you that you hardly noticed the car drive away, leaving you alone at this new school, but you didn’t feel that way at all.…

When, the last bell rang, I was supposed to go to my school bus that was going to leave me near from the bridge, but my friend and I never found it, we asked some big kids and finally found the bus, that it was just arriving. “We are safe!” I shouted to my friend. When my mom picked me up, I talked to her about my actions at my obstacles at school, how I solved it and that high school should not be worse, as it is for now. She smiled and securely stated “See how I was not wrong about that school, it is going to change your perception of the world.”…
